By the grace of Hashem,
First day of Selichos 5710,

To the students of the Yeshivos*,
to whom Hashem will grant long life [1],

I greet and bless you,

With the permission of the learned Rabbanim, the directors of the Yeshivos*, to whom Hashem will grant long life, I address you herewith, my friends, students of the Yeshivos*, in addition to my letter of 18 Elul [2].

Divine Providence has granted you the immense good fortune to be among those whose only occupation is the Torah of Hashem. Hashem has given a particular virtue to youth, that of strength and enthusiasm. These two elements mean that you bear a particular responsibility.

You must be among the first to act and to invite others to action, to give spiritual Tzedakah* to those who are morally poor, to give it with kindness and largesse.

Our Sages teach: "Great in itself is the obligation to study Torah, beyond all the other Mitzvot*, of which it is the equivalent, for it leads to action" [3]. But when one cannot entrust the performance of a Mitzvah* to someone else — for example because one will be better heeded oneself, or because the action of others is insufficient to put the Mitzvah* into practice — one must interrupt one's study to perform it. Only afterwards does one resume one's study.

In the course of the approaching month of Tishri, the month that brings to every Jew the obligation and the merit "to renew his actions and to improve his actions" [4], you, students of the Yeshivos*, must gather all your strength:

A) In your efforts toward yourselves: You must reach a true Teshuvah*, submit yourselves to the kingship of Hashem, to the Torah, fearing Hashem and putting the Mitzvot* into practice joyfully [5].

B) In your action toward others: You must draw close to those who are in need, strengthen those who are weakened, by guiding them toward Teshuvah*, the study of Torah and the practice of the Mitzvot*.

Moreover, you must conduct a particular and broad campaign, by every possible means, so that every child, every young person, receives a good education, in the spirit of the Tradition of Israel, without compromise.

"And the Holy One, blessed be He, says to Israel: If you improve your actions, I will leave the throne of strict judgment to take My place on that of mercy, and I will transform severity into compassion" [6].

ברשות הרבנים הגאונים שליט"א, מנהלי הישיבות, הנני פונה אליכם בזה ידידי, תלמידי הישיבות, ביחוד, נוסף על מכתבי מח"י אלול.

האושר הגדול אשר ההשגחה העליונה סייעה בידכם להיות מאלו אשר תורת ה' היא חלקם, והסגולה המיוחדת אשר השם יתברך הטביע בבני הנעורים שהם בעלי כח ומרץ ביותר, שני הדברים האלו מטילים עליכם אחריות מיוחדת להיות מן הראשונים, הן בהעושים הן בהמעשים את אחרים, לנתינת הצדקה הרוחנית לעניים בדעת, ונתינה בעין יפה וביד רחבה.

פסקו רז"ל: גדולה מצות עשה של תלמוד תורה, מצד עצמה, משאר מצות. שקולה היא כנגדן משום שהתלמוד מביא לידי מעשה. אבל אם אי אפשר למצוה להעשות על ידי אחרים, כגון שדבריו נשמעים יותר או שאין עשית אחרים מספקת למצוה זו - מפסיקין התלמוד ועושין המצוה ורק אחר כך חוזרין לתלמודו.

בימי חודש תשרי הבע"ל, הוא החודש אשר בו חובת וזכות כל איש בישראל, "לחדש מעשיו ולשפר מעשיו", הנה אתם, תלמידי הישיבות, עליכם להתאזר ביתר שאת ויתר עז

(א) בעבודה עם עצמו: להתעורר בהתעוררות תשובה אמיתית, קבלת עול מלכותו יתברך, וקבלת עול תורה ביראת שמים וקיום המצות בשמחה.

(ב) בעבודה עם הזולת: לקרב את הצריכים קירוב ולחזק את הצריכים

חיזוק - בעבודת התשובה למוד התורה וקיום המצות. וביחוד לנהל תעמולה רחבה ובכל אופנים המתאימים, אשר כל ילד וילדה, נער ונערה בישראל צריכים להתחנך בחנוך הכשר, ברוח ישראל סבא, בלי פשרות.

"ואמר להן הקב"ה לישראל, אם שפרתם מעשיכם, אני עומד מכסא דין ויושב על כסא רחמים, והופך לכם מדת הדין למדת רחמים".
