Igrot Kodesh · Letter 749 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 3 · Letter 355 · To: seuil de la nouvelle année

By the grace of Hashem,
18 Elul 5710,
Brooklyn,

To our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of Israel,
in every place where they find themselves,
may Hashem grant them long life [1],

Greetings and blessings,

On the threshold of the new year, which will bring good and blessing to the sons and daughters of Israel, each one of us is in a state of awakening, establishes the accounting of what was the year that has just elapsed, of what one has done and of what has happened. One then takes the decision to improve oneself, and one prays to our Father in Heaven, in order to be inscribed and sealed, with all one's own, for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually [2].

Our Sages emphasize that, by giving Tzedakah* [3] to a poor person, one can be answered, obtain a good life, redemption and salvation, opulence and the satisfaction of material needs.

Man [4], like all other creatures, including the highest angels [5], possesses a body and a soul. And just as one can be poor in one's body, incapable of assuring the satisfaction of his needs, one can also be poor in one's soul, unable to satisfy his needs.

It is the same with Tzedakah. The latter can be material or spiritual. In Tana D'vei Eliyahu Rabba, chapter 27, our Sages, commenting on the verse "when you see a man unclothed, you shall cover him," say: "How is this? In fact, if you see someone who does not know the words of the Torah, bring him into your house, teach him the Shema Yisrael and the prayer, encourage him to the practice of the Mitzvos*."

Each one of us wishes to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually. One must therefore endeavor to give Tzedakah, material and spiritual at once, in particular during Elul and Tishrei.

In these days, we present ourselves before the King, King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He. Each one of us will therefore have to establish a great accounting [6], according to his own possibilities, of the Tzedakah he has given to save a poor person materially and to preserve him spiritually.

He who is materially poor is himself bound to give material Tzedakah [7]. In fact, every poor person is capable of finding a means of coming to the aid of his fellow.

And it is the same with spiritual Tzedakah. He who is spiritually poor must also give of it. There is no man or woman, in the people of Israel, who is not capable of exerting a positive influence on the Jews and Jewesses, who cannot bring them closer to the fear of Hashem, to the Torah and the Mitzvos.

And the effort is to the measure of each one [8]. The rich, materially and spiritually, scholars of the Torah, those who devote themselves to its study, students of the Yeshivos, must spend broadly their money and their knowledge, to save, heal, and care for the soul and the body of their brothers and sisters.

And our merciful Father [9] will inscribe and seal each one of us, among the entire people of Israel, for a good and sweet year, in visible and tangible good, materially and spiritually. He will grant us, very soon and in our days, the true and complete redemption by our righteous Moshiach*. Amen.

Menachem Mendel Ben Chana Schneerson,
son-in-law of our leader and master, the Rebbe

Notes:
[1] Letter 481, written in the middle of the year 5709/1949, was the first "collective-personal" letter, whose meaning has been previously defined. At the end of 5710/1950, the Rebbe also introduced "collective" letters. This one is the first of this category, which was, in its time, duplicated by mimeograph and reproduced in a very large number of copies. In these letters, the Rebbe addresses indistinctly all the "sons and daughters of Israel, in every place where they find themselves." This letter and the two following were also printed in Sefer HaMaamarim 5711 of the previous Rebbe, then in an independent booklet, edited in Elul 5714/1954, whose foreword says: "On this occasion, the Rebbe Shlita has reviewed once again the text of his letters, and he has added notes at the bottom of the page."
[2] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "One will consult Hagahos Maimoniyos, laws of Teshuvah, chapter 3, paragraph 3, and Likkutei Torah Devarim, page 56a."
[3] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Bava Basra 10a, broadly commented by Iggeret HaKodesh, by the introduction of the Siddur, and by other texts."
[4] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Broadly commented by the sequence of Chassidic discourses of Rosh Hashanah 5710."
[5] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Including those who are in the spiritual world of Atzilus, according to Iggeret HaKodesh, chapter 20. See Etz Chaim, gate 50, chapter 8. You will also consult the Pardes, gate 24, chapters 11 and 15. This is what the Ramban says, cited by Torah Or 4b, the Likkutei Torah Berachah 98a, the Rambam, laws of foundations of the Torah, chapter 2, paragraph 3, cited by the Ramban, at the end of Shaar HaGemul, and the Guide for the Perplexed, volume 1, chapter 49, which excludes that this body be material. One will also consult the Guide for the Perplexed, volume 2, chapter 6, the Pardes, sixth gate, chapter 6. But, one may still question on this subject."
[6] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Bava Basra 9b. See Iggeret HaKodesh, chapter 3."
[7] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, chapter 248, and commentaries at this reference."
[8] Literally, "the mark on the back of the camel is to the measure of the weight of its burden." The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "It is precisely so. See the importance of the punishment, in this case, in tractate Kesuvos 66b."
[9] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah, in the discourse entitled 'Shir HaMaalos MiMaamakim,' at the beginning of the second chapter, and the commentary of the discourse 'I am black and beautiful,' at the beginning of chapter 6."
