To the attention of Mr. Chaim, who is called Dr. Shaskes (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 5093),

I greet you and bless you,

Rav Chaim Mordechai Aizik Chadakov (note 2: Director of the Rebbe's secretariat) has informed me that you are departing on a trip with your wife. I therefore wish you a fruitful journey. This success will be marked in the domain of Judaism, which means that in every place where a Jew goes, he accomplishes the mission of the Creator of the world, Who directs it. This consists of transmitting a way of life based on the Torah* of life and its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them" — a life, in the literal sense, in this material world. You have surely heard (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 7457) that there existed a custom in Lubavitch* according to which, at the conclusion of Simchas Torah*, at the end of the festivals of the seventh month (note 4: That of Tishrei), when one prepares for ordinary days, it was announced: "And Yaakov went on his way," that is, the way that must be his, according to Hashem Who bestows His Providence upon each person (note 5: See, on this subject, letter no. 7457). This is how one merits the fulfillment of the end of this verse: "And angels of Hashem met him," in order to protect him on his way and lead him to his place of destination.

May Hashem grant that you convey words of encouragement to our brothers, the children of Israel, wherever they are, especially since you have visited the countries behind the Iron Curtain. You will therefore be able to present to them the following a fortiori reasoning: if, under such conditions, the Jews strive to remain faithful to Hashem and to His Torah*, truly at the risk of their lives, how much more must those do so who have the merit of living in countries where religious freedom is granted. It is your duty and your merit to fully seize such opportunities, to be generous toward others, in every place where your influence is exercised, in a constantly increasing manner. הרב רחמ"א שי' חדקוב מסר לי הידיעה על דבר נסיעתו ביחד עם זוגתו שתחי', והנני מאחל להם נסיעה בהצלחה, שהצלחה במושג היהודי היינו שבכל מקום שיהודי בא שמה ממלא שליחות בורא עולם ומנהיגו, שליחות של השפעה באורח חיים על פי תורת חיים ומצוותי' עליהן נאמר וחי בהם, חיים כפשוטו גם בעולם הזה.

ובטח שמע שהי' מנהג ליובאוויטש שבמוצאי שמחת תורה, בסיום הימים טובים דחודש השביעי והכנה לימי החול, להכריז ויעקב הלך לדרכו, פירוש לדרכו דרך הראוי לו מהשם יתברך המשגיח על כל אחד ואחד בהשגחה פרטית, שאז זוכה לסיום הכתוב ויפגעו בו מלאכי אלקים, לשמרו בדרך ולהגיעו למחוז חפצו.

ויהי רצון שימסור לאחינו בני ישראל בכל מקום שהם דברי התעוררות, בפרט אחרי ביקורו במדינות שמאחורי המסך, שיכול ללמד להם ק"ו, ומה שבתנאים ההם יהודים מתלבטים להשאר נאמנים לה' ולתורתו במסירות נפש ממש, על אחת כמה וכמה שכל יהודי הזוכה לגור במדינות שיש בהן חופש הדת שמחובתו וזכותו לנצל האפשריות במילואה בכיוון הנ"ל ולהיות עינו טובה גם בשל אחרים עד כמה שידו מגעת ובאופן דמוסיף והולך.
