Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7471 — Prayer
Volume 20 · Letter 26 · To: distingué ‘Hassid
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Marcheshvan* 5721,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Moshe (note 1: Rav M. Shayevitch, of Chicago. See, regarding him, letter no. 7385) HaCohen,
I greet you and bless you,
After a long interruption, I received your greetings through the intermediary of the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments, Rav Tzvi Shusterman. As you asked him, he questioned me about the responsibility of the synagogue. I have already expressed my opinion (note 2: See, on this subject, letters no. 1487 and 4214), according to which you must continue to assume it. As you know, the essential and profound aspect of this responsibility concerns the order of the prayers and of the Torah* teachings given there. Since it is a Chassidic* synagogue, these classes must also deal with Chassidus*. You will verify that the prayer leader conducts the prayer in the proper manner, in particular during Shabbos* and the festivals. Likewise, after the prayer, it is appropriate to read the Tehillim* according to their monthly division, in accordance with the practice instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. Furthermore, the classes in the revealed part of the Torah* and in Chassidus* will be set at the appropriate hour. This is how you will carry out your functions. Hashem knows what is truly accomplished and the title, the designation, therefore matters little. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.
As the Baal Shem Tov* explains, everything is an effect of Divine Providence*. In this case, your question reached me and my response is addressed to you on the eve of 20 Cheshvan* (note 3: See the preceding letter), date of the birth of the Rebbe Rashab*, father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. This year marks the centennial of his birth and one can understand its significance from what Chassidus* explains regarding the beginning of our Parshah*: "And the life of Sarah was one hundred years." You will consult the Zohar* at this reference and the explanation of the Or HaTorah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*. You will also see the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, at the beginning of Parshas* Toldos*. With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings,
