Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7468 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 20 · Letter 23
By the grace of Hashem,
17 Marcheshvan* 5721,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of this Sunday and, due to its content, I send you the present letter bypassing the queue. You describe to me the relationship between a husband and a wife. In accordance with the ruling of our Sages*, the establishment of peace between a man and his wife is among the practices whose fruits a man consumes (note 1: In this world, while the capital is preserved for the World to Come). It is clear that every effort that can be made in this matter is justified — this is self-evident. It is equally evident that in such a domain, it is impossible to issue intangible rules, for everything depends on the character traits of the man and the woman, on the surroundings within which they evolve and live. But in any case, it is certain that one can determine, for each person, the appropriate approach, the influence that can be exercised, by meditating, by seeking the path that suits such a person, step by step, in a pleasant manner but with the proper determination and with words emanating from the heart. And it is not at all difficult to hold warm words, since those who listen are concerned, as are their children and future generations.
The common element and the effective aspect of every event comparable to this one must be connected to what is said in Avos de Rabbi Nosson*, chapter 12, regarding the conduct of Aharon, who "loves peace (note 2: And pursues peace)." May Hashem grant success to your action, so that you strengthen a Jewish home, which will also be based on the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, down to daily action. You say nothing of the month of Tishrei*, the one that is satiated with all good. I hope that it was taken advantage of in the proper manner. Indeed, it has a general import for the entire year. One must therefore preserve the motivation and the enthusiasm of the festival days throughout this year. If this is expected of everyone, how much more so for someone to whom Divine Providence* has entrusted the merit and the success of leading a Jewish community on the path that leads toward the Sanctuary of Hashem. With my blessing to give good tidings of both your personal concerns and your communal achievements,
If the activities of this couple permit it, one can think that by traveling together, for a few weeks, for example to a vacation spot, for a "second honeymoon," one will be able to remedy this situation.
