To the Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Ch. M. [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter of 7 Elul, and I thank you for having communicated to me information on the provisional burial [2], then on the one [3] that took place in the Holy Land.

You tell me that you and your brother both wish to lead the prayer service [4]. It results from this that there are at times only seven persons praying with one and seven with the other. You ask me whether it is preferable that only one of you lead the service, so that the quorum is fully attained.

I have not received clear instruction on this subject. Nonetheless, it seems preferable to me that each of you conduct the service. Most of the time, you will surely both be able to gather ten persons. And, sometimes, when you must content yourself with six persons [5], you will rely on the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, chapter 69, paragraph 5, considering them "as a whole community." For he has broad shoulders!

As you asked of me, I will mention your names and those of the members of your family at the gravesite of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

I conclude wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, to settle in the manner that suits best, materially and spiritually.

במענה על מכתבו מז' אלול, ת"ח על הידיעות שכותב לי אודות אופן הקבורה ארעית ואח"כ בארץ הקדושה.

ומה ששואל שהוא ואחיו שיחיו חפצים כל אחד לירד לפני התיבה, ומזה נגרם שלפעמים יש במנינו של כל אחד ואחד מהם רק שבעה מתפללים, ושואל אם כדאי שאחד מהם יתפלל כש"ץ כדי שיהי' מנין שלם של עשרה מתפללים, הנה הוראה מפורטת לא שמעתי בזה, אבל לפי דעתי טוב שכל אחד ואחד מהם ירד לפני התיבה וברוב הפעמים הרי בודאי יהיו עשרה מתפללים בכל מנין, ואם לפעמים יוכרחו להסתפק בששה כו' יסמכו בזה על השו"ע שאומר שהם "כמו צבור גמור" (שו"ע אדה"ז סס"ט ס"ה) וואס ער האט ברייטע פלייצעס...
