Volume 20 · Letter 14

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Marcheshvan* 5721,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of this Wednesday. The teaching of our masters and leaders (note 1: See, on this subject, letters no. 7231 and 7359), whose merit protects us, is known, according to which, just as one must know one's faults, one must also be aware of one's qualities. And there is, in particular, the well-known saying (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 6835) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, which many of the Great Ones of Israel also commonly employ, condemning slander also regarding one's own person. This applies to each of you, for all possess a divine soul, which is "a veritable part of the Divine from above" (note 3: According to the expression of the second chapter of the Tanya). And "even at the moment of sin, it remains faithful to Him," as the holy Tanya* specifies, according to the index at the end of this work, in the Kehot edition, under the entry "joy." This text establishes that all of this does not contradict Teshuvah*. It also states what is the reflection that arouses this true joy, which is also accessible to each person.

Another point, which is also essential — one can concretely verify that one of the stratagems of the evil inclination consists of arousing in a Jew a feeling of discouragement, which would be unthinkable. Then, it advances its argument, asserting that there is no hope, which would be unthinkable, that there is therefore no reason to deprive oneself of the pleasures of this coarse world and its vanities. It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked. Each weekday morning, before the prayer, you will set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*. Then, after the prayer, each day, including Shabbos* and festivals, you will read the Tehillim* according to their monthly division. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

You say that one "monopolizes the Torah* and the Mitzvos*" (note 4: During the campaigns of Mitzvah dissemination). You will consult, on this subject, the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 4, paragraph 3 (note 5: Affirming the importance of Mitzvos, which are the purpose of wisdom).

P.S.: As you request, this letter is sent to you by express, bypassing the queue.
