Igrot Kodesh · Letter 745 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 3 · Letter 351

By the grace of Hashem,
17 Elul 5710,

To the Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav ...,

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh Elul. I learned with satisfaction that you have completed your studies, have obtained your diplomas, and that you already practice your profession.

You know that the Rambam, in his laws of opinions, explains at length how to put into practice the precept "in all your ways, know Him." He shows that, by every element of one's life, one must be able to serve Hashem. Undoubtedly, if you make the appropriate effort, you will find the best way of serving Hashem on the path on which you have engaged.

You tell me that, during your travels, you encountered Orthodox Jews and drew a teaching from their behavior. This is a very good thing, and indeed the Mishnah says: "Who is wise? He who learns from every man." And you will find, in the memoirs of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the commentary of the Baal Shem Tov on this saying [1].

Nonetheless, all this is not enough. For a man must indeed learn, but also teach others. There are different ways of doing so — either by dispensing teaching, in the most literal sense, that is by speaking to others and showing them the upright behavior, in the service of Hashem as in relations between people; or also by showing them an example, by one's own behavior, in particular by one's study of the Torah and one's practice of Mitzvos*.

Thus, if one sees a person who always adopts good behavior, one will say: "See such a person, who has an attitude worthy of a Jew. Each one must therefore imitate him." I wish that, with time, it be so for you, and not only in the second manner [2].

Thus, you say in your letter that you teach at Sunday school [3] and work in a Jewish company. You will therefore teach still more actively, by directly exerting a positive influence on others, by leading them to study the Torah, to be penetrated with the fear of Hashem, and to fulfill the Mitzvos.

You tell me that it is difficult for you to transform your personality. I do not understand exactly what you mean. Are you alluding to your relationships with other persons or to something else? You will surely clarify your remarks next time.

You also write me that you are surprised by the politics of the world, in relation to the coming of Moshiach*. Here again, you do not explain clearly to me what is the object of your astonishment. You no doubt remember our conversation, when you were here. We were saying that the Holy One blessed be He has created nothing useless in the world. This is true also of the events that take place there and of the way of interpreting them.

Thus, if it were necessary for the service of Hashem, there would surely be persons who would predict the future, in order to render this service easier. If one does not find such persons, it is therefore that this service is expected of us, even if we do not know in advance what will happen.

About two months ago, I already said that, in my opinion, there will not be a war in the coming months. There is therefore no reason to be afraid, and each one can devote himself to his occupations as usual. The only thing that matters is to carry out the mission for which his soul descended into this world. To succeed in this, one must study the Torah and accomplish the Mitzvos, as Chassidus* explains.

When someone has had the merit of being entrusted with a mission by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, it must be clear to him that this is part of the role allotted to his soul, here below.

To return to what we spoke of some time ago, when you asked me several questions about Eretz Yisrael, it is no doubt now obvious to you, since the Holy One blessed be He has shown the Jews unambiguously, that this is not the long-awaited redemption. He explains it with kindness and mercy, so that one know that there is here only a small part of the salvation.

For various reasons, we have not yet obtained the redemption that has been announced to us by our prophets, and for which we pray every day saying "and to Jerusalem, Your city" [4], "the offshoot of David Your servant" [5], "may our eyes witness" [6].

But, before saying "and to Jerusalem, Your city," we first proclaim: "And we shall never be ashamed, for in You we have placed our hope." Before saying "may our eyes witness," we affirm: "Merciful Father, take pity on us."

Thus, it is clear that the redemption will come from Hashem Himself, that it is linked to Torah and Mitzvos, as our Sages explain in various texts, of which here are some references: "Israel will be redeemed only when it accedes to Teshuvah*"; "Israel will be redeemed only by Tzedakah*." Each Jew and each Jewess must know that all their good actions hasten the redemption, the end of exile and of darkness, bring closer the complete and true redemption, by our righteous Moshiach.

This is therefore the only means of obtaining the redemption of Israel, and Moshe Rabbeinu himself said it to the Jewish people more than three thousand years ago. He even consigned it at length, in the Torah of Hashem, in Parshas Nitzavim, in chapter 30.

You asked me to mention your name at the gravesite of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and that is what I will do. But you say that you do not understand this practice. Nonetheless, when you eat, drink, or sleep, I assume that you do not reflect, beforehand, on the effect this can have on your body and on your soul. Now, you do these actions, although you do not understand them. It can therefore be the same in this domain.

You say that this manner of acting resembles a conversation with the dead, Hashem forbid, that one then addresses someone other than Hashem [7], from which Hashem will guard us. You no doubt understand that this is in no way the case. You know that Calev son of Yefuneh, Sages of the Mishnah and the Gemara, Tzaddikim* of various epochs acted in this way.

I will reply briefly to your question. When one came to ask a blessing of the Rebbe [8], one did not address oneself to him because of the superiority of his body, but indeed because of the elevation of his soul. Now, death affects only the body, for the soul is eternal. That of the Tzaddik, in particular, cannot know Gehinnom [9] or the kaf hakela [10]. For it, death can therefore only be an elevation, an ascent toward a higher stage. But this Tzaddik is not a "dead one," Hashem forbid. This is what the Zohar, volume 3, page 71, explains.

You also claim that one addresses oneself to someone other than Hashem [7]. I will explain to you briefly that this is in no way the case. Indeed:

A) One asks the Tzaddik, in his great perfection, to intercede on behalf of the one who solicits him, before the King, King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He.

B) Another point must also be introduced. Each Chassid, bound to the Rebbe, possesses a soul that is a portion of that of the Tzaddik, which possesses a collective character — is compared to the head in relation to all these individual souls, as the second chapter of the Tanya says. Each member of the body receives its vitality from the soul. But this is revealed first of all in the brain and in the head. It is only afterwards that it conveys to each member the vitality of which it has need.

Now, it is the same for the relationship between a Chassid and his Rebbe. The head, which is healthy and strong, possesses the vitality that befits each member of the body. That the latter be also healthy, it must bind itself fully to the head, that is, have nerves that function well. It is then that it can receive the vitality.

In a general way, it is in these terms that one can define the bond of a Chassid to his Rebbe, and it is in this manner that the latter obtains the satisfaction of all his needs, material and spiritual.

Time does not permit me to develop this analysis, but I have good hope that what has been said will be sufficient. If you have questions on what has just been said, you will communicate them to me, and when I have free time, I will endeavor to reply.

You will find enclosed the booklet edited on the occasion of 18 Elul.

And I conclude wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,

Menachem Schneerson
