Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7433 — Grief & Loss
Volume 19 · Letter 406
By the grace of Hashem,
21 Elul* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 14 Elul*, month of mercy, in which you briefly describe to me what you have experienced, as well as the loss you have recently suffered, with the passing of your son. May the Consoler of Zion and of Jerusalem strengthen each of you, to the greatest extent possible, and may you know henceforth only good and abundance. You speak to me of your family and its origin. It is unnecessary, I hope, to remind you that the soul is eternal. In fact, the sages of the nations recognize this and they do not even express any doubt on this subject. This soul merely passes from one stage to another. Consequently, all those who were previously connected to it and who seek its good must endeavor to provide it with satisfaction, to the greatest extent possible. In fact, even when the soul is in the body, it is to the soul that one is connected, it is the soul that one loves, for the body is merely an outer garment. How does one provide it with satisfaction? By introducing a spirit of purification, a pure light into its four cubits and into its surroundings. It is in this way that a person and a place can receive the blessing of Hashem, Source of true life, true Existence. In all that is connected and attached to life, the words of the verse are fulfilled: "And you, you are attached to Hashem your Elokim*, all living today." It is unnecessary to specify that these words allude to our Torah*, Torah* of life, and to its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them."
Another point on this subject, although this clarification is no doubt unnecessary — I hope that you have adopted an arrangement concerning the recitation of Kaddish* and the study of the Mishnah* for the soul of the deceased. Furthermore, and this is essential, you must give Tzedakah*, in the literal sense as well as in its moral dimension, by disseminating traditional Judaism in every place where your influence is exercised. I would be pleased to receive good tidings concerning this arrangement. I must also refer to the beginning of your letter, concerning your place of work, on account of which you did not write to me until now. I am surprised and astonished by this, for you work with Jews. Now, all bear a collective responsibility and, who knows? Perhaps you work there so that, through your intermediary, there be an addition to "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," as well as to the luminary of the Torah*, its deep dimension, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*, with its light and its vitality. Already, beforehand, there was no Jew who did not have his moment, a domain in which it was possible to exercise an influence upon him. And how much more so at the present time. One can observe, in the milieu you describe and in which you work, a motivation for the true values of the Jews, the Torah*, the ancestral Tradition, study, which leads to action, to the effective practice of the Mitzvos*. It is on this subject that our Sages* say: "Nothing resists the will." With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
P.S.: I read with pleasure the few lines you write to me about your brother, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, who shall have long days and good years. You tell me that he knows success in his actions of disseminating the light of the Torah* in his surroundings, in ever-widening proportions, especially among the young men and young women who build the future and strengthen it.
