By the grace of Hashem,

At the conclusion of the holy Shabbos*, 18 Elul* 5720,

date of the birth of the Baal Shem Tov* and of the Alter Rebbe*, Brooklyn,

To the young man Chaim (note 1: Rav C. Volkin, of Wickliffe, Ohio. See, regarding him, letter no. 7321),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 6 Elul*, month of mercy, in which you describe to me the arrangement that has been adopted for this period of compassion. As the Alter Rebbe* says in the Likkutei Torah*, in Parshas* Re'eh*, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "I Am to My Beloved," the King is then in the field and He reserves a benevolent welcome for each person. It is therefore quite evident that one should increase everything that pertains to prayer, to Torah* and to Mitzvos*. In the words of the verse: "I am to my Beloved" first, and then: "my Beloved is to me," the initial letters of whose words form the name Elul*, and as the books of Kabbalah*, Mussar* and Chassidus* explain, the arrangement to adopt, as stated by the later Sages*, is as follows: one must increase prayers and supplications, compared to the rest of the year. You will consult, on this subject, the Birkei Yosef*, cited by the Mateh Efrayim*, chapter 581, paragraph 11 (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "In the Mateh, at the same reference of this work"). The same applies to the study of Torah*, of which one develops the part that is linked to the service of Hashem, and likewise to the practice of Mitzvos* in the best manner. The books of Chabad* dealing more specifically with all of this are Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, the third part of the Tanya*, and the Derech HaChaim* by the son of the author of the Tanya*, the Mitteler Rebbe*.

May Hashem grant that you accomplish all of this. You will do so, as it is said: "One ensures that Tzedakah* is given (note 3: Which includes recourse to compulsion)," by forcing yourself to go beyond your habit, beyond what your intellect indicates. Indeed, we have received the following Injunction: "Nullify your will before His." With my blessing to study the Torah* with fear of Hashem, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

במענה למכתבו מו' לחדש אלול, חדש הרחמים, בו כותב אודות סדר בימי הרחמים האלו.

והנה אף כי בדברי רבנו הזקן, המלך נמצא בשדה ומקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות וכו' (לקוטי תורה פ' ראה, ד"ה אני לדודי) מובן וגם פשוט שצריך להרבות בעניני תפלה תורה ומצות, וכסדר הכתוב אני לדודי (בתחלה) ודודי לי, ראשי תיבות אלול, וכמבואר בספרי קבלה מוסר וחסידות, והסדר בזה בכלל וכמובא באחרונים, שמרבים בתפלה ובתחנונים בערך שאר השנה (עיין ברכי יוסף, הובא במטה אפרים סי' תקפ"א סעיף יא*) וכן בלימוד התורה, מרבים בחלק השייך לעבודת השי"ת ולהדר בקיום מצותי', ובספרי חב"ד הרי מיוחד לזה: אגרת התשובה (חלק ג' מספר התניא) דרך החיים (לבנו אדמו"ר האמצעי) וכו'.

ויהי רצון שיעשה בכל האמור, יעשה לשון מעשין על הצדקה, כפי' יותר מרגילות, ויותר מאשר שכלו מורה לו, והרי נצטווינו בטל רצונך מפני רצונו וכו'.

בברכה לתלמוד תורה ביראת שמים ולכתיבה וחתימה טובה.
