Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7425 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 398
By the grace of Hashem,
10 Elul* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I bless you and greet you,
I am responding to your letter of the end of the month of Menachem Av*, in which you mention the wearing of a wig. You tell me that in the religious circle in which you move, it is not worn. You therefore fear that people will mock you if you do. Now, the necessity of wearing a wig and not being content with a hat or a scarf is established by various texts, and one can observe concretely that a hat, or even a scarf, does not cover the entire head, at least for a moment — which means that one then transgresses a serious prohibition, as the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 75, rules. The importance of all this can also be deduced from the immense reward granted to the one who puts into practice the Injunction as we received it. In the words of the Zohar*: "One receives all the upper and lower blessings — wealth, children, and grandchildren."
You tell me that people might mock you and that you would feel ashamed. Now, among the young people in the United States, one has recently felt a sentiment of respect toward those who strongly mark their positions, who are not affected by those who mock them and their way of life. They regard with disdain and contempt those who follow the majority without any strength of character. You surely know that the beginning of the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch* is: "One shall not be affected by people who mock, when one serves Hashem." Another point, which is equally evident: Hashem says, "I fill the heavens and the earth." He accompanies a person in every place and at every moment. The same is not true, however, for other people, even those in one's immediate proximity. They cannot always be nearby. Consequently, is it conceivable that you would not be ashamed before the Holy One, blessed be He, which would be unthinkable, and that you would fear men of flesh and blood? Given the education you received, as indicated at the end of your letter, I hope it is unnecessary to say more.
Hashem grants His Providence to each man and each woman, and this is a fundamental principle of our faith, as the teaching of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*, explains at length — this year marking the bicentennial of his Hilloula*. He will therefore guide you on the path that will be good for you, both materially and spiritually. With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary,
