Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7422 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 395 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

8 Elul* 5720,

bicentennial (note 1: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See tractate Tamid*, chapter 3, Mishnah* 2, which says: 'until Chevron'") of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments, devoting himself to communal needs, the Rav Sh. Y. (note 2: Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin. See, regarding him, letter no. 7066) Shlita*,

I greet you and bless you,

I learned with pleasure that you will conclude the study of the Talmud* on the Monday of Parshas* Ki Savo*, "When you come into the land" (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "'When you come to the will and so that you reach it,' according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, reported by the Hayom Yom*, at the date of 18 Elul*"). As is Jewish custom, which is an integral part of the Torah*, you will no doubt immediately recommence this study once again, for "the end is linked to the beginning and the beginning to the end."

Moreover, this study is public, and it therefore creates a bond among all who take part in it, from "your heads of tribes" to "your hewers of wood and your drawers of water." All unite in this way, as the Alter Rebbe* explains regarding Parshas* Nitzavim*: "You are all standing today" (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Tavo*"), a Parshah* that is connected to the period before Rosh Hashanah*. Such unity brings elevation to the drawer of water and the hewer of wood, just as to the head of a tribe, as this Chassidic* discourse specifies.

What has just been said can be explained by the beginning and end of the Talmud*. Its conclusion is as follows: "Rav Shemaya said to Rav Abba: 'Can one say that a woman becomes a Zavah* by day and a Niddah* by night?' He replied: 'It is regarding this that the verse says: "on her Niddah*," meaning in proximity to it. Now, in proximity to the Niddah*, it can be night, and the verse nevertheless speaks of Zavah*.'" Afterward, a teaching is reported that was stated in the study hall of Eliyahu*, which certain versions do not retain, and those that do admit it is there only to conclude with praise and consolation (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "This passage is therefore not the conclusion, and when one recommences this study immediately, one finds it here only because a Mishnah* and a teaching of our Sages* cannot be removed. One will note the change of order of the Mishnah*, in the fifth chapter of Avos*, in the Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe* and in that of the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, as the Shaar HaKollel* notes. But one can still question this"), as the Tosefes* states.

This passage can be applied to the service of Hashem, in accordance with the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* according to which every thing and every idea that a person sees or hears must deliver a lesson for serving his Creator. How much more so when it concerns our Torah*, Torah* of life, which, as its name indicates, delivers a teaching for life.

The difference between the impurity of the Niddah* and that of the Zavah* is as follows. The former belongs to the nature of the world, although it appeared therein only after the transgression (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Eruvin* 100b"), which is not the case with the latter, which is a manifestation of the body having no natural character. Now, the same applies to the service of Hashem. Impurity exists and it takes its source precisely in the one called "the impure one" (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Sukkah* 52a. Zohar*, Volume 1, page 35b"). And it is natural, even if it became so only after the transgression. Moreover, it is said of the four righteous ones who are known (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Shabbos* 55b, and one will consult Rashi*'s commentary there, which says: 'and not because of another transgression'") that they died "by the bite of the serpent" — that is, because of the original transgression.

At stages closer to us, one can make a deduction by considering the mitigating circumstances (note 9: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the lengthy explanation in the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, appearing in the Kovetz Michtavim, Volume 1, and reproduced in HaTamim*, Volume 2." This letter appears in his Igros Kodesh, Volume 3, letter no. 810, page 455) that were granted by the Maggid* of Mezeritch to the thoughts conceived by the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov*, reproaching him for devoting himself to common people and showing them the greatest closeness. The Maggid* made several interventions to rectify these thoughts. Moreover, he was not content with this, and one night, while traversing the sanctuaries of Gan Eden*, he arrived in the one where the children who study the Chumash* are found. Moshe was teaching them the verse: "Avraham fell on his face and he laughed." He then emphasized that this verse could not be separated from its plain meaning. Now, one may ask how Avraham doubted the Word of Hashem. In fact, it was so because of the body, for even a holy body is nonetheless made of flesh.

There is, furthermore, the one who excites his fellow's evil inclination, which is called "illness" (note 10: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Yerushalmi*, tractate Shabbos*, chapter 14, paragraph 3, explained in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'The Fifty Gates of Understanding,' of 5653, in the Kuntres 18 Elul* 5703"). The impurity that results from this is that of the Zavah*. Rav Shemaya, whose name alludes to understanding, to reasoned analysis, therefore addressed Rav Abba, corresponding to intellectual discovery that transcends effective understanding, such that there was between the latter and the former the relationship of awe that exists between a father and a son (note 11: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Midrash* Bereishis* Rabbah*, chapter 36, paragraph 6"). He said to him that the day evoked the period illuminated by "the sun and its sheath," when the Divine Presence is evident. Despite this, one could then observe a flow of blood separating from the body and investing its warmth in external preoccupations. He asked whether such a situation could be called Zavah*, inasmuch as there had indeed been an excitation of the evil inclination, which had become like "the donkey that is cold in summer." Conversely, the same manifestation during the night, within the darkness described by the verse: "And I will hide My face," was merely a situation of Niddah*.

Rabbi Abba, transcending the intellect, was nevertheless able to answer this question, although it had been entirely judicious. Certainly, the Oral Torah* must, above all, be understood, he indicated. However, one had to rise above understanding and consider the verse, the Written Torah* (note 12: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See, on this subject, the lengthy explanation of the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Vayikra*, from page 5b"), in which the letters and phrases are more important than their meaning. This is why an unlearned person also recites the blessing of the Torah*. It says: "on her Niddah*" — that is, in proximity to it — for every external flow of blood, whatever it may be, is possible only because of the proximity of the Niddah*, resulting from the original transgression, which transformed nature and defiled it. What results from the Niddah* is therefore the night, the concealment of the light of the "sun of Hashem." The Written Torah*, the verse spoken by the Holy One, blessed be He, qualifies such a situation as Zavah*, for it is not inevitable. It is, properly speaking, an illness. Now, in such a case, Hashem grants His help, in particular through man's understanding, through the power of self-sacrifice that each person possesses (note 13: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 25"). Then, even during the night, the candle does not go out — "the candle of Hashem (which) is the soul of man" — and Hashem illuminates the darkness.

Likewise, "the end is linked to the beginning." In the darkness of the night, an Injunction is thus given, as well as the strength to put it into practice, for "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with treachery toward His creatures" — that of reading the Shema* Yisrael of the evening, of proclaiming His Sovereignty above, below, and at the four cardinal points. The strength for all of this comes from Meimosai, "from when?" — which the Alter Rebbe*, according to an explanation of Rabbi Avraham the Angel, reads as Meima, feeling awe before Him, in the face of His greatness — a higher awe, linked to wisdom, or, at the other extreme, the fear of punishment, the lower fear — that of the heads of tribes as well as that of the hewers of wood and drawers of water.

May Hashem grant that despite the deep darkness of the night of exile, there be fulfilled in each person the reading and the revelation of the Shema*: "Hear, O Israel, Hashem is our Elokim*, Hashem is One" — as the Zohar*, Volume 2, page 116b, explains, according to which nothing else can replace the Shema* Yisrael. The later Sages* have developed lengthy explanations on this subject (note 14: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the beginning of the Shaarei Zohar*, at the beginning of tractate Berachos*, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, section Orach Chaim*, at the end of chapter 60, the Tzafnas Paneach* of the Gaon of Rogatchov, on the Rambam*, Laws of Shema* Yisrael, at the beginning of chapter 2"). Thus, the darkness will be transformed into light and "the night will shine like the day."

With my respects, my blessing that each of the participants in this study, to whom Hashem will grant long life, be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
