Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7419 — Tzedakah
Volume 19 · Letter 392 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
5 Elul* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Ephraim Eliezer (note 1: Rav E. E. Yalles, Rav of Philadelphia. See, regarding him, letter no. 7136) HaCohen,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your postcards of the 1st and 3rd of Elul*, month of mercy. You ask me about chapter 14 of Iggeres HaKodesh*, according to which the fact that the six hundred and thirteen Mitzvos* of the Torah* were transmitted to Moshe on Mount Sinai is a teaching of our Sages*. In the first part of the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 20, this statement is indeed cited in the name of our Sages*, and you will consult the first notice that appears at the beginning of the Tanya*, defining the nature of Iggeres HaKodesh* and explaining how the letters constituting its text were found.
At the end of the second postcard, you refer to a wholehearted service of Hashem. On this subject, you will consult the beginning of the Tzavaas HaRivash*. At a Chassidic* gathering (note 2: The second day of Sukkos* 5720. See Sichos Kodesh 5720, page 20, and Biurim Al Tzavaas HaRivash, page 3. See also the discourse of 18 Elul* 5746, in Hisvaaduyos 5746, Volume 4, page 401), I remarked on this subject that one can define the conditions of this wholehearted service. It must enable one to obtain the final result, without any subsequent act being necessary, as tractate Yoma* 26a states. This is indeed the novel point introduced by this text of Tzavaah* (note 3: Testament of the Baal Shem Tov* which, in this case, is not actually a testament, but merely a collection of texts established by his disciples). This idea seems evident and it appears in various texts.
You refer to the holy Or HaChaim*, who speaks of the vegetative aspect of the soul, Nefesh*, and of its emotional aspect, Ruach* (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Consult what the Nesiv Mitzvosecha* says on this subject, in its fourth section"). You will consult, on this matter, the Ginzei Nistaros*, Volume 1, chapter 70, reporting the words of the Baal Shem Tov* about the author of the Or HaChaim*. The words of the Chida* are also known, regarding the proportions that the study of his book received following the words of the Baal Shem Tov*. With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
