Volume 19 · Letter 389
By the grace of Hashem,
2 Elul* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your telegram, in which you ask me about the study of the abridged Chumash*. In this matter, the instruction of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, and of his father, the Rebbe Rashab*, whose merit protects us, is well known. It is an absolute prohibition. You will deduce from this my position, which can only be a total rejection.
May Hashem inspire all those responsible for Jewish education, everywhere, including those you mention, so that they become aware of the veracity of our Torah*, Torah* of truth, which does not tolerate abridgments and compromises. The Torah* is complete. Every Jewish man and every Jewish woman must be educated to receive it, and a single soul is, by itself, an entire world. This education will therefore be based on sacred values, in order to produce students who will be defined by all who see them as "a progeny blessed by Hashem." With my respects and my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
