Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7412 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 385 · To: membres de la commission organisatrice(1)
By the grace of Hashem,
Rosh Chodesh* Elul*,
the month of Elul* 5720,
bicentennial of the Hilloula* of our master,
the Baal Shem Tov*,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the members of the organizing committee (note 1: Of a trip to the Rebbe*), in Kfar Chabad*, may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your request for a blessing, which will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I will make a proposal, after introducing the following point. It is only in a few cases that one is permitted to leave the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, to go abroad. One of them is the pilgrimage to the tombs of the righteous, as the Sdei Chemed* states, at the beginning of the compendium of Laws and in the Peas HaSadeh*. How much more is this the case when it concerns a righteous person, a leader of Israel (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Yerushalmi*, tractate Berachos*, chapter 3, end of paragraph 1"), to whom one was close, whose teaching one studied, whose teachings and directives one puts into practice, or at the very least, when one commits to doing so. As has been said, our masters and leaders explain that one attaches oneself to them (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See also the Hayom Yom*, page 68, the Tanya*, chapter 5, which speaks of an 'extraordinary unification,' at the end of chapter 49 and in chapter 37, emphasizing that the giving of Tzedakah* is that of the vitality of one's soul") by studying their teaching and putting their directives into practice. Now, it is well known that my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Israel, gave of himself for Chassidus* in general and, in particular, for its broadest dissemination, among the most varied circles, with love and in the language these people understand.
Consequently, each man and woman participating in this trip must put all of this into practice even before it begins. I mean that all must strengthen their study of Chassidus* and especially the Chassidic* discourses of the one who rests in this tomb. Regarding the women, what has just been said also applies to them and concerns them even more. You will consult, on this subject, the Laws of Torah* Study of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of chapter 1, which state: "Women are obligated to learn the Halachos* that concern them, all the Injunctions that do not have a fixed time. In that era, the scholars expounded the Torah* in a language they could understand." Among these Injunctions that do not have a fixed time, there are above all those that apply permanently (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the letter that introduces the Sefer HaChinuch*"), without being interrupted for a single instant, throughout one's life. They are as follows: 1) Faith in Hashem. 2) The rejection of every other faith. 3) The unity of Hashem. 4) The love of Hashem. 5) The fear of Hashem. 6) The prohibition against being led astray by the thought of the heart and the vision of the eyes. One achieves this, in particular, through a study which, in our era, is that of Chassidus*, as the Rambam* rules in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, at the beginning of the second chapter, and as practice widely proves.
Likewise, without making a vow, each person will set aside, each weekday morning, a few coins for Tzedakah*, for the institutions of the one who rests in this tomb, in order to strengthen them. Furthermore, before the trip, all will visit, at least once, within all of Israel, circles that for the moment are not yet attached (note 5: To the Rebbe*) in all that concerns them — which means that, at least in a more refined sense, they can still be called "outside." During this visit, all will deliver words of encouragement in general and transmit the teachings of the one who rests in this tomb in particular. Of course, the more one multiplies all of this, the better. During the trip, the three well-known studies on the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* will be taught publicly, according to the practice established by the one who rests in this tomb. One will also learn one of his teachings, whichever one wishes, according to the desire of the majority of the participants. Without a doubt, all the travelers and the entire crew (note 6: Of the airplane), who are Jewish as well, will join in this.
May Hashem grant that this trip take place at a good and fruitful time, in its various aspects and especially in its deep dimension — its contribution to strengthening the dissemination of Judaism in general and of the wellsprings (note 7: Of Chassidus*) to the outside in particular. You will benefit from your stay here, in the formula of our Sages*, "as is fitting to do," in joy and enthusiasm. Very soon, we will merit the fulfillment of the promise: "In calm and in pleasure" (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the conclusion of the great series of Chassidic* discourses entitled VeKachah"). Indeed, we will all return, in joy and pleasure, to our Holy Land, through our righteous Moshiach*, very soon. In anticipation of good tidings of all this, I conclude by wishing each man and each woman among you, who will have long days and good years, to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually.
Menachem Schneerson,
P.S.: This letter is also a response to the personal letters of several of the participants in this trip, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years. No doubt you will convey its content to each of them.
