(28 Menachem Av* 5720)

I became aware of your state of health, which is not good, and I was sorry to hear it. Without a doubt, a large part of this depends on your nervous state and your thoughts, on the fact that your service of Hashem is not sufficiently joyful. As the Rambam* rules, and as the Tur* and Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 231, cite among others, the service of Hashem is fulfilled "in all your ways" (note 1: In every action) — in eating, in drinking, in walking. I am surprised to see you in such a state, for it is essentially the consequence of a diminished faith, the state of people whom our Sages* call: "Those who have a diminished faith." Indeed, a faith that is as it should be necessarily leads one to admit that "the burden is according to the measure of the camel" (note 2: The result is according to the measure of the effort). This means that the Holy One, blessed be He, does not entrust a person with a mission that he does not have the means to carry out. Now, "having a healthy and complete body is among the ways of Hashem" (note 3: In the words of the Rambam*). It is therefore quite clear that the service of Hashem cannot diminish physical health. Certainly, there are veils, concealments. Sometimes, it may seem that these go beyond measure, and perhaps it is truly so, but one knows what is explained on this subject in the Tanya*. The word Mataamim*, meaning delicacy, bears the mark of the plural, for there are two categories, two forms of satisfaction — that which requires no struggle and that which passes through combat. Now, one goes to the front with a joyful song, as a discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, establishes. And the same applies when one wages a moral war, which must not call physical health into question, although the thing must be done.

May Hashem strengthen and fortify you. In this way, in good health, you will be able to fulfill your mission, which consists of disseminating Chassidus* in your location, of building the Dwelling of Hashem here below, including in your country, by disseminating the wellsprings (note 4: Of Chassidus*) to the outside. With my blessing,

M. Schneerson,
