Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7403 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 375
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Av* 5720,
Brooklyn, New York,
To Mr. Yitzchak Damiel (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 7053),
I greet you and bless you,
I have not received a letter from you for a very long time. I do not know who is "indebted" (note 2: Of a letter, owing a reply to the other) to the other, but the essential thing is that this period of time has been used in the best way, to the fullest extent possible. I hope that this has indeed been the case. You surely know what "my" motto is this year — my hope and my request that everyone redouble their ardor, in every possible way, to disseminate the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) to the outside (note 4: On the occasion of the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*). I was asked the following question: on what basis did I assert that this year is propitious? Now, if one could question this at the beginning of the year, several months have passed since then and concrete practice has proven that the announcement of the bicentennial has had an echo and an influence on diverse and varied circles. One might have logically thought that this question would not have been raised in religious or, more precisely, Chassidic* circles, which live in the spirit of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* and were already doing so one hundred ninety-nine or one hundred ninety-eight years after his passing. Now, it turns out that the responsibility in this matter falls not upon the persons to whom this call and announcement are addressed, but indeed upon these Chassidic* circles. You must understand what this means.
Of course, what has just been said also has the purpose of increasing the zeal of each one of us. It is clear that you yourself can intervene in two ways: by conducting a campaign and delivering teaching in your milieu, on the one hand, and by exercising influence everywhere you can reach and establishing there people capable of delivering this teaching, on the other. To my sorrow, due to the lack of interest in what follows and in this call, on the part of religious circles, one has practically not felt until now the profound absurdity and foolishness of the well-known claim (note 5: See, on this subject, letter no. 7052) of certain "enlightened" Jews, according to which the Baal Shem Tov*, his disciples, and the students of his disciples made compromises with the concrete practice of the Mitzvos*, which is unthinkable. In fact, this error has claimed many victims.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge receipt, with my thanks, of your book Al HaSaf (note 6: "On the Threshold"). Of course, I read it with interest. I will make one remark of a general nature concerning your book. It seems that in this matter, my conception was not sufficiently expounded in my letters responding to the group of your disciples. Indeed, the deep dimension of my response to the questions you posed to me at that time, as well as to the questions stated in your book, is the following: it is absolutely false to say that these people are not believers. An analogy will illustrate this idea — that of a man who claims not to believe in food and drink, while he eats and drinks three times a day. The proof is as follows: man, by nature, fully accepts conclusions whose reliability is far more limited than that of various philosophical theories and, certainly, than that of the faith of Israel. Now, he bases his life on these conclusions, sometimes even putting his life in danger — for example, by taking an airplane to travel. Moreover, he considers anyone who does not adopt the same attitude as abnormal, as someone who does not belong to the civilized world. It follows that conclusions whose proofs are much more decisive than these must, without a doubt, be accepted and must impose themselves upon all. However, it is not surprising that a given person can delude himself and present himself as a non-believer. It suffices to observe the results of such an illusion, which very often has the effect of removing all boundaries, regarding both "turn away from evil" and "do good." This clearly means that the reason for such an illusion is a desire to simplify one's life, to "rid oneself" of the practice of Injunctions and Prohibitions, to have an unbridled existence.
Of course, what has just been said applies when one begins to stray from the straight path. Subsequently, when one has adopted this behavior for some time, habit becomes nature, as is the way of the human personality, both in manner of acting and in illusion. By repeatedly telling oneself that one is not a believer, one manages to convince oneself that such is the reality. And one can find proof that this is so when a tragic event occurs, piercing the external layers of one's personality and reaching the deep point. Then, one realizes that one does indeed have faith. In fact, one must see in this the application of what is explained in chapter 19 of the Tanya*, in the Chassidic* discourse of the day of the Hilloula* (note 7: The 10th of Shevat*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, entitled: "I Have Come into My Garden," and in other texts as well. I am somewhat surprised that in your book, you do not even consider such a conception. I have not found it in the letters you have addressed to me until now either. I therefore conclude this letter as I began it, expressing the wish that you publish about the Baal Shem Tov*, about his personality, about his teaching, and that you continue to do so. I thank you in advance for sending me a copy here. Obviously, what has just been said can also be transmitted to your disciples. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, as well as of all other domains, and of each member of your family, to whom Hashem will grant long life,
