Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7402 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 374

By the grace of Hashem,

15 Av* 5720,

Brooklyn, New York,

To Mr. Yosef, who is called Dr. Goldschmidt (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 7193),

I greet you and bless you,

You have surely received, a long time ago, my letter in response to yours. For the moment, the purpose of this letter is the preparation of the coming school year. Everything is an effect of Divine Providence*, including the fact that your article in English, concerning the fusion of the exiles in the domain of education, reached me these days. I have good hope that in the future, you will continue, to the fullest extent possible, to bring your help to the Chabad* schools, in a constantly increasing manner, since we are asked to ascend in all the domains of holiness. I therefore cannot refrain from expressing my gratitude to you. Even if this is unnecessary, one can do so to counsel zeal, which has meaning only for those who naturally possess this quality.

It is clear that one must not attach too much importance to diplomas, as I have emphasized many times (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 7193). Of course, you are right to say that the higher the level of studies, the more gifted the educator, and the greater the influence he exerts on the students. It is evident that I also ask those who listen to me to train and perfect themselves in their teaching. However, it is no less important — it is perhaps even more decisive — to devote oneself fully, with enthusiasm, to this holy mission: education based on sacred values.

Regarding your article that emphasizes the importance of an approach adapted to the mind and feelings of the students, the necessity of encouraging and strengthening them, I have good hope that you have been able to verify, personally or through your emissaries, that the integration of the various communities within the Chabad* schools is proceeding in an optimal and harmonious manner, in the most concrete way. One instills therein, furthermore, the love of the Torah* and its Mitzvos*, without taking any account of the crowds outside or even of the inner circle. You also emphasize this idea in your article, and this is one of the points of the Chabad* conception, which has always stressed it. At the present time, the men of Chabad* still intervene in all domains and, above all, in that of education. As I said, I hope you would have adopted such an attitude even if I had not written to you. My letter therefore has the sole purpose of emphasizing all of this, in the formula of the author of the Tanya*. I thank you in advance for all of this. With my respects and my blessing,

I received, in its time, an instruction addressed by the Ministry of Education to all schools, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the passing of the Baal Shem Tov*, as well as the explanatory documents. Now, according to a tradition transmitted from generation to generation, the 18th of Elul* is the date of his birth. And it seems to me that this date will also be that of the next school opening. I hope, consequently, that this will have a follow-up, which will be even more clearly emphasized in the religious branch (note 3: Of the public school system) that you direct by an effect of Divine Providence*. I do not know what your personal education is in matters of Chassidus*. However, it seems to me that I heard you say, during our conversation, that you received your education in Frankfurt. Now, the president of the rabbinical court of that city was the Baal HaHaflaah* (note 4: See, on this subject, letter no. 7371), a student of the disciple and successor of the Baal Shem Tov*, the Maggid* (note 5: Of Mezeritch). In any case, it has already been established that all the fears (note 6: Expressed about Chassidus* in its early days) were unfounded. All admit that Chassidus* has enlivened the various aspects of Judaism and, even more, the observance of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, in the best manner. This is well known and no one contests it.
