By the grace of Hashem,

19 Tammuz* 5720,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter, in which you describe the impression and the influence aroused by your participation in the Chassidic* gathering that took place here (note 1: A single letter was addressed to many people). I hope that this influence will last for many days and that it will awaken in you an increased drive and ardor for the study of our holy Torah*, Torah* of life, and for the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them."

We are currently "between the straits" (note 2: Between the 17th of Tammuz* and the 9th of Av*). In these days, we recall the destruction of the House of our splendor, the exile of our people. You surely know what the reason was for this exile and this destruction. As we say in the prayer: "Because of our transgressions we were exiled from our land" — which means that the purpose of these days is to repair, to eliminate the causes that led to the destruction. The means to achieve this is the Injunction: "Turn away from evil and do good," on a daily basis. Furthermore, you will influence your friends in this direction, and what our Sages* say about a true motivation is well known: "Nothing resists the will." With my blessing of success in the study of the Torah* with drive and ardor (note 3: This letter is addressed to a Yeshivah* student), as well as to accomplish the Mitzvos* in the best manner, with joy and enthusiasm, which will without a doubt provide a broad and true satisfaction to your parents, to whom Hashem will grant long life,

תקותי שהשפעה זו תאריך ימים ותעורר אותך בתוספת התמדה ושקידה בלימוד תורתנו הק' תורת חיים וקיום מצוותי', עליהן נאמר וחי בהם.

כיון שנמצאים אנו כעת בזמן של "בין המצרים", אשר בימים אלו אנו מעלים על זכרוננו חורבן בית תפארתנו וגלות עמנו, בטח יודע אתה מה היתה סיבת הגלות והחורבן, וכמו שאומרים אנו בתפלה - ומפני חטאינו גלינו מארצנו. זאת אומרת, שתכלית הימים האלה היא לתקן ולבטל הסיבות שהביאו לחורבן. והדרך לזה היא - סור מרע ועשה טוב בחיי יום יום, וכן בהשפעה על חבריך, וכשרוצים באמת, הרי אמרו חכמינו זכרונם לברכה: אין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

בברכת הצלחה בלימוד התורה בהתמדה ושקידה וקיום המצוות בהידור, בשמחה ובטוב לבב, ואז בטח תהי' רב נחת אמתי להוריך שיחיו,
