Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7359 — Tzedakah
Volume 19 · Letter 331
By the grace of Hashem,
11 Tammuz* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I follow up on my previous letter and respond to your questions. It is quite evident that you wrote to me from the opposite extreme, displaying your discouragement and your disappointment regarding all that you have accomplished until now. Yet this is not justified, for you know the following saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: "Just as one must know one's faults, one must also be aware of one's qualities." Now, one can concretely observe the immense harm that results from listening to the overtures of the evil inclination in this matter — these being intended to cause a person to fall from his true level. And one can verify concretely that this is so. However, not responding to its overtures does not mean going to the other extreme either and telling oneself that one can permit oneself everything, that one is indeed charged with bringing about the final outcome — even if it is certain that one thereby brings elevation to the one who must receive it, to the full extent of what is necessary, and even if the one who brings this elevation does not suffer from it, nor does his surroundings. As my previous letter stated, several actions are interpreted by those who observe them as a carte blanche that is being granted. Moreover, the following reasoning is even adopted: such a person gives his guarantee to such conduct, and it is therefore certain that in our milieu, we can adopt it from the outset — indeed, that it is the most elevated attitude.
All of this will be even clearer in light of a saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, relating to a teaching of our Sages* on the manner in which the "cunning one" acts. The latter demands, first of all, an action to which one can consent, for he is skilled in his craft and he presents himself to each person with the fitting garment, multiplying his actions. To someone who puts all his energy into bringing elevation to others — in particular those who are lost and pushed away — he will present a reasoning, hard as iron — Barzel*, a term that has the same numerical value as Amalek* — according to which the most important salvation will result from action in such a domain, that in this matter there is not the slightest doubt — Safek*, a term that also has the same numerical value as Amalek* — moreover that no one else can do it, that in any other eventuality there is no hope of bringing elevation to these sparks of holiness, Heaven forbid. Such actions are therefore so important that they serve to corrupt. They have the effect of hiding and concealing what one can observe through one's senses.
We are on the eve of the days of liberation, the 12th and 13th of Tammuz*. May Hashem therefore grant that each one of us be liberated from everything that obstructs him. And in fact, the greatest obstacle does not come from what is evidently forbidden, but indeed from what is perhaps forbidden, and from the doubt upon the doubt. This is self-evident. With my blessing to give good tidings and on the occasion of the festival of liberation,
