Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7345 — Tzedakah
Volume 19 · Letter 316 · To: jeune homme
By the grace of Hashem,
25 Sivan* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the young man who devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Immanuel (note 1: Rav I. Schochet, of Toronto. See, regarding him, letter no. 7065),
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received the periodical in which several articles on the Baal Shem Tov* and on various points of Judaism are published. Of course, I was pleased by what you write about the Baal Shem Tov*, his teaching, and his conceptions. I hope the interest will be mutual — not only for the readers but also for the editor. This is quite evident. And without a doubt, you will send me the continuation. I thank you in advance. In accordance with the custom of Jews, I will make a few remarks on what has already been published, for their equivalent may perhaps be found in the next articles. Furthermore, it would be appropriate, in my view, to consider publishing the continuation in the form of a specific pamphlet, with, of course, the improvements and corrections that are necessary when passing from a periodical to an independent fascicle.
These remarks are formulated after a rapid examination, and I will introduce a first one of general scope. You cite many authors in the footnotes and, even more so, in the body of the text. For some of them, one can truly wonder whether it is justified to cite them as references, even though not everyone consults them. How much more does such a question arise regarding the body of the text. Moreover, regarding what you write and what you cite, one can choose as references authors and works about which there is no dispute. If you reread your articles, you will surely understand to whom I am alluding. In such a case, when there is a doubt, one must adopt a stringent attitude, for the readers belong to diverse and varied circles (note 2: Including those who will interpret such a citation as proof of the validity of those works).
B) In the second chapter, at the end of the paragraph that refers to the Zohar*, the citation from the Yerushalmi*, Tractate Sanhedrin*, chapter 1, paragraph 2: "Content yourself with the fact that I myself and your Creator, we know your strength" — must be corrected.
C) In chapter 4, regarding the schools, you cite the testimony found in the memoirs of Shlomo Maimon. It is established that he is not credible in this matter, for the hatred he felt for such practices caused him to exceed all measure in various domains.
D) Concerning what is said in chapter 5, Adam Baal Shem and the Baal Shem Tov* never met, according to the letters published in HaTamim*. This contradicts your assertion that they studied together. Likewise, at the end of this chapter, you say that the original manuscript addressed by the Baal Shem Tov* to his brother-in-law has been preserved. Now, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, already explained at length in his letter that the writings of the Kherson archives are copies and not originals (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 7338).
E) At the beginning of paragraph 26, which is the last, the formulation is not appropriate. Furthermore, the same applies to the content, for one cannot say that from his birth, or even from the age of ten, the Baal Shem Tov* did not wish to reveal himself. The Likkutei Dibburim* specifies that he remained hidden for twenty-six years, which means from his birth (note 4: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "This does not mean that he deliberately hid himself from that age") until he reached that age. Subsequently, he studied for ten years, and finally, he revealed himself for twenty-six years (note 5: The Baal Shem Tov* lived sixty-two years). Nevertheless, all of this has no other purpose than to encourage this enterprise (note 6: The publication of these articles), for this publication in periodicals is judicious and it is good to continue it. With my blessing to give good tidings,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary,
