I bless you and greet you,

I am responding to your letter of 14/6, in which you tell me about your sons, who do not follow the path of the Torah*. Because of this, you have begun to fast and you ask me what I think of it. Now, as Chassidus* explains, fasting can be replaced by giving Tzedakah*. It would therefore be very judicious to find friends and acquaintances who will speak to your sons about the study of the Torah* and the practice of the Mitzvos* — not just once, but many times — and from the outset in a friendly manner, but with all necessary determination. They will speak words emanating from the heart and, in this way, these words will penetrate into the heart of those who hear them.

It would be good to have the Tefillin* of the men who are obligated in the practice of this Mitzvah* checked. You yourself will observe the positive custom of Jewish women, which consists of setting aside Tzedakah* before lighting the candles, on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals. במענה למכתבה מיום /6;14amp&, בו כותבת אודות בני' שי' שאינם מתנהגים בדרך התורה, שלכן התחילה להתענות, ושואלת דעתי בזה.

והנה על פי המבואר בספרי חסידות, תחליף התענית בנתינה לצדקה, ומאד נכון הי' למצוא ידידים ומכירים אשר ידברו עם הבנים שלה בהנוגע ללימוד התורה וקיום המצות, וידברו לא פעם אחת אלא כמה פעמים, ובהתחלה בדרכי נועם אבל בתוקף הדרוש, ויהיו דבריהם יוצאים מן הלב, שאז נכנסים ללב השומע.

מהנכון אשר יבדקו את התפילין של הגברים המחויבים בהנחת תפילין, ואת המזוזות בדירתה שתהיינה כולן כשרות כדין, וכן אשר תשמור היא על מנהגן הטוב של בנות ישראל, להפריש לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת וערב יום טוב.
