To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Chaim Shalom (note 1: Rav Ch. Sh. Schwartz, of Yerushalayim*),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 18 Sivan* and, at a propitious moment, your request for blessing will be read near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. You ask me whether you should translate the Tze'enah U'Re'enah* (note 2: Commentary on the Torah* in Yiddish*, for the use of women) into the Holy Tongue. In general, this is indeed a good initiative. Nevertheless, one must research whether someone has not already done so. And I am not referring solely to this translation into Hebrew, but also to the composition of a similar work (note 3: Another Torah* commentary intended for women).

Since everything is an effect of Divine Providence, the obligation and the merit fall upon me to emphasize to you the necessity of fixing a time for the study of the inner part of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. At all times and in every place, this has been indispensable, but how much more is this the case in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, especially in our era. Furthermore, this year marks the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*. It is therefore a favorable year for the dissemination of the wellsprings of Chassidus*, until they reach the outside. You also tell me about a young man who will come here in order to be in a Chabad* setting, to work and to study there. Now, such a setting does not exist here, for at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, studies continue throughout the entire day. More generally, the Yeshivah* does not accept new students at the present time. With my blessing to give good tidings,

שלום וברכה!

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מח"י סיון, ובעת רצון יקרא הפ"נ שלו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

ולשאלתו בהנוגע להעתיק את הצאינה וראינה ללשון הקדש, בכלל נכון הדבר, אלא שצריך לחקור אולי הקדימו כבר אחר בהאמור, כוונתי לאו דוקא העתק מהנ"ל ללשון הקדש כי אם ספר דומה להנ"ל.

וכיון שהכל בהשגחה פרטית, עלי החובה והזכות לעוררו על ההכרח בקביעות עתים בלימוד פנימיות התורה אשר בדורנו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות, שאם בכל המקומות ובכל הזמנים הי' הכרח בזה, עאכו"כ באה"ק ת"ו ובתקופתנו ביחוד, והרי השנה היא גם שנת המאתים להסתלקות הילולא של הבעש"ט שנת סגולה להפצת המעינות שהיא היא תורת החסידות ועד שיגיעו גם חוצה.

במ"ש אודות אברך שיבוא לכאן להמצא במסגרת חב"ד בעבודה ובלימודים, - הרי אין כאן מסגרת כהנ"ל, כי בישיבת תומכי תמימים הלמוד כל היום כולו. ובכלל אין הישיבה מקבלת עתה תלמידים כהנ"ל.
