By the grace of Hashem,

17 Sivan* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 12 Sivan*, the conclusion of the days of completion of the festival of Shavuos* (note 1: During which the festival offerings were brought), time of the giving of our Torah*. At a propitious moment, your name and that of your wife will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. You speak of the evolution of your state of mind. Indeed, when you hear words of encouragement, you are very motivated, but afterward... (note 2: The effect fades). The solution in this matter is well known. The motivation must immediately be linked to a concrete action — study of the Torah*, practice of the Mitzvos* in the fitting manner, or even in the best manner. In this way, it is easier to preserve this motivation, once it has already received a concrete application, as several sacred books establish. This is the reason why, in various texts, a prophet received the Injunction to accomplish a concrete action. This is quite evident.

You tell me that you worry about how you will earn your livelihood. Our Sages* give the following advice on this matter: it is incumbent upon a person to multiply his participation in Tzedakah* and to distribute it over many occasions. One of the propitious times to give it is each weekday before the morning prayer. It is then that you will set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*. I also seize this opportunity to emphasize to you the necessity of fixing a time for the study of the inner dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. If this has been a necessity in every place and at all times, how much more is this the case in the present era and in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt — especially since this year marks the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*, a favorable year for disseminating his wellsprings, those of Chassidus*, so that they reach the outside. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

The secretary,

P.S.: It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, as well as the Mezuzos* of your home, to ensure that they are all valid in accordance with Halachah*.
