By the grace of Hashem,

17 (note 1: The Rebbe writes 'Tov' — 'good' — a term whose numerical value is seventeen) Sivan* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I received a request for blessing for you, through the intermediary of the father-in-law of your son, the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem. At a propitious moment, I will therefore mention your name near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. And just as your request was transmitted to me, may Hashem grant that you yourself give me good tidings on this subject, especially since we have just experienced, on the first day of the festival of Shavuos*, the two-hundredth Hilloula* of our master the Baal Shem Tov*. Now, you know the interpretation he gives of the verse: "When you see the donkey... you shall surely help him" — according to which it is fitting to serve Hashem also with the body and with all that pertains to it (note 2: The Baal Shem Tov* teaches: "When you see the matter of your body, you could consider it an enemy and wish to break it through fasts and mortifications. On the contrary, you shall help him").

To pass from one subject to another while remaining in the same context, I have already written many times to many people to emphasize that it is indispensable to disseminate the wellsprings of the Baal Shem Tov* — that is, the teaching of Chassidus* — until they reach the outside. In general, your attitude is marked by great discretion, but you will excuse me for telling you that one can truly wonder whether such conduct is appropriate in the present era. And to this as well, perhaps the teaching transmitted by the Baal Shem Tov* himself applies. Indeed, the Baal Shem Tov* in no way wished to reveal himself, as his holy writings specify. Certainly, who would dare compare himself to the Baal Shem Tov*? Nevertheless, this account has reached us. There is therefore surely not a simple, banal, and uninteresting exposition here, but indeed a lesson, a concrete example for all who wish to follow in his footsteps, as the Alter Rebbe* explains in chapter 44 of the Tanya*, which you will consult. May Hashem grant that in this matter as well, you give me good tidings, which will be, according to the expression of our Sages*, of a true good — "good for the heavens and good for health" (note 3: 'Bryut' — paraphrasing the common expression: 'good for the creatures' — 'Bryot') — a good that bears fruit, those of the Tree of Life, of the inner teaching of the Torah* which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
