Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7315 — Tzedakah

Volume 19 · Letter 286 · To: jeune Morde’haï Yossef Eléazar(1)

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Iyar* 5720,

Brooklyn,

To the young man Mordechai Yosef Elazar (note 1: Rav M. Y. E. Goldschmidt, of Tel Aviv. See, regarding him, letter no. 7245),

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I duly received your letter of 21 Iyar*, announcing to me the good news that you have begun teaching Chassidic* discourses during Shabbos* in the synagogues of Yafo*. May Hashem grant that you continue all this with increased determination and ardor, for in all that concerns the Torah*, Mitzvos*, and holiness, we have been asked to ascend in what is sacred. This Injunction is permanent, which means that the action itself must increase permanently.

How much more so is this the case regarding the inner dimension of the Torah*. As the holy Zohar* specifies, it is called "the soul of the Torah*." Now, every contribution to the soul, which is by nature infinite, as Tanya* explains in chapter 51, manifests in all its two hundred and forty-eight limbs and three hundred and sixty-five sinews. And you will understand what follows from this for the Torah* itself (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 7313). From this observation follows a clear-cut teaching, which is the following: every effort, every investment is justified in this matter. Indeed, these days are propitious, especially as we approach the time of the giving of our Torah*, on the first day of the festival of Shavuos*, which is also the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*. This year, this day is a Wednesday and, as the Alter Rebbe* says, it is then that the luminaries were suspended and removed. This is quite clear. With my blessing to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner, as well as to give good tidings of all this,

M. Schneerson,
