Volume 19 · Letter 284

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Iyar* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of this Tuesday evening, in which you relate what has happened to you — your lack of enthusiasm, your sad thoughts. You ask me what I think of this. Now, everything pertaining to our Torah*, Torah* of life, is a teaching for life, and from this positive formulation, one can deduce... (note 1: A negative formulation: "What does not pertain to the Torah* is not a teaching for life"). In this instance, the holy Zohar*, Volume 3, page 152a, calls the inner dimension of the Torah*: "the soul of the Torah*." It follows that when the soul lacks enthusiasm, the body experiences the same feeling. Indeed, its two hundred and forty-eight limbs and its three hundred and sixty-five sinews correspond to the two hundred and forty-eight Injunctions and the three hundred and sixty-five Prohibitions, as well as to the study of their laws. Simultaneously, it is clear that the soul cannot find its vitality in all things (note 2: But only in what can provide it). Thus, during sleep, this vitality is sufficient for digestion, but it is not sufficient for comprehension, for experiencing a profound feeling, except for illusions and dreams — in particular those discussed in the holy Zohar* and defined by Tanya*, in chapter 29.

In light of what has just been said, you will understand what is the solution to be brought to such a situation: one must strengthen the vitality of the soul and, for this, fix a regular time for the study of the inner dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. You will therefore have such a study each day, and it will be more substantial on Shabbos*, which is holy to Hashem, as explained by the writings of the Arizal*, making reference to the study of the inner teaching of the Torah* on the day of Shabbos*. May Hashem grant that this fixing be not only in time but also and above all in the soul, according to the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the inner part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*. And nothing resists the will. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this and, in the words of the master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

The secretary,

N.B.: It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, so that they be kosher in accordance with Halachah*. Likewise, each weekday, before the morning prayer, you will set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*.
