Volume 19 · Letter 278

By the grace of Hashem,

20 Iyar* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 5/6, in which you tell me about your son. You tell me that he must continue his studies in order to obtain a high school diploma, as if this were the only means for him to earn his livelihood in the future. I am surprised by this, for you find yourself in a place that is the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. You must therefore know that thousands of young men of your son's age — may Hashem multiply them — are in the Yeshivos* of Eretz Yisrael*, studying our Torah* which is also called Torah* of life, which includes both the life of this world and that of the World to Come. They learn it with drive and ardor, with moral confidence, joy, and enthusiasm. My astonishment is all the greater since you surely have knowledge of what has been published by several periodicals of the Holy Land regarding the mindset and conduct of the youth of this country. Now, the most effective protection against the undesirable winds blowing in the street is precisely provided by these Yeshivos*, to the point that among the thousands of young delinquents, not a single Yeshivah* student studying Torah* all day can be found. Indeed, the primary obligation of parents toward their children is to enable them to face life with strength, without moral turmoil, without struggles and inner conflicts. Recently, pedagogical science has tried several ways to achieve this, but, as I have said, the driest statistics, published everywhere, including in other countries, have established without the slightest ambiguity the consequences of such attempts. This is quite evident.

In other words, if your son were not attracted to the studies he has chosen, it would be your duty to influence him to accept them, at least for some time, for a few years. Now, through a kindness of the Almighty, your son is animated by good sentiments and appreciable qualities. As a result, he has, of his own accord, chosen what is good, positive, and holy. He therefore adopts this position, as well as the studies that follow from it. You should thank Hashem for having granted you such a blessing, and strengthen and encourage your son in his decision in an ever-increasing manner. For it is absolutely certain that the One of Whom it is said: "He nourishes the entire world with His goodness, His grace, His beneficence, and His mercy," Who provides for the needs of two and a half billion people, will enable him, too, to earn his livelihood when the time comes. Let your son therefore study the Torah* of the Creator of the world, Who directs it. Let him do so with enthusiasm and warmth, and this will multiply the blessings of Hashem, as it is said: "If you walk in My statutes," and our Sages* explain: "By making your efforts bear on the Torah*" — then, "I will give your rains," together with all the blessings enumerated in the Parshah*. With my blessing to derive from your son a Jewish satisfaction, a true satisfaction, in good health and with inspiration,
