Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7306 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 277
By the grace of Hashem,
19 (note 1: Originally, this letter was dated 17 Iyar*. This is why there is mention, further on, of "the eve of the luminous day of Lag BaOmer*," corresponding to that date. Subsequently, a correction was made and the date of 19 Iyar* was retained) Iyar* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of Hod* of Netzach*, "the Attribute of Splendor within the Attribute of Victory" (note 2: In the counting of the Omer*, the 11th of Iyar*). At a propitious moment, you will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all the points mentioned in your letter. You say nothing to me of the state of health of this woman and this indicates, I hope, that it is better. You also allude to the position proposed to you in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, its advantage being the possibility of drawing certain people closer to Chassidus*. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to explain that the situation in this matter is fundamentally different in Eretz Yisrael* from what it is here.
In this country, it is accepted that accepting a function within a certain institution cannot be interpreted as a blank endorsement of that institution. On the other hand, the same is not true in the Holy Land — first, because of political parties, and furthermore because the opposite of the fraternity that prevailed at the time of the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash* and was its cause, nineteen centuries ago, still manifests itself there (note 3: Literally "still dances." See, on this subject, letter no. 2059), it would seem. Consequently, anything there can be distorted and exaggerated. Another point, which is equally essential, in accordance with the response I have given to various people in this matter: in a case where one does not settle in a new country, when it becomes apparent that a behavior must be changed and improved, one can oppose — more or less justifiably — the demand for such change only because of the blockage imposed by the leaven that causes the dough to rise (note 4: The evil inclination), or by arguing about what seems insurmountable (note 5: This evil inclination transforming the way one conceives reality. The necessary improvement then seems considerable and insurmountable). To this is added the impurity of the land of the nations and the minority status of Israel among these peoples. The same is not true, however, when one moves of one's own free will, especially to go to the Sanctuary of the Supreme King, the Holy One, blessed be He. In that place, logic will not accept all these justifications, which will remain dead letters. The first question that then arises is the following: who asked you to come, without the appropriate preparation, to the "land toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year," and which does not tolerate what goes against the Wisdom and Will of Hashem?
This idea ought to be developed, but I am confident that you yourself will be able to do so at length. You write to me that I am occupied and absorbed by Orthodox politics and that I do not clearly observe the situation in other domains, that I do not measure the great opportunities that present themselves to act for Hashem and for His Torah*. First of all, I do not accept the expression "Orthodox politics," for those who employ it allude to the observance and development of the Torah* and Mitzvos*, extending to daily conduct. Now, each of us must invest in this matter to the fullest extent possible, to the point of identifying with such a mission, engaging in it fully. For our worldview is this and only this. It is the foundation of unity, the basis of the faith of the children of Israel, as it is said: "In all your ways, know Him." In eating, in drinking, one can attach oneself strongly and firmly to Hashem, without diverting one's mind from Him, as various texts establish, and you will consult, on this subject, Tanya*, at the end of chapter 3.
You will deduce from what has just been said that such a conception in no way prevents one from observing the situation in other domains. On the contrary, it is the prism through which one can consider reality as it truly is — that is, as it appears to the One Who possesses true Existence, to the Creator. This is what eyes of flesh do not see, corrupted as they are by various elements and perhaps also by personal interests. But we have not yet merited identifying with the perspective that is termed "Orthodox politics." To borrow the terms of Tanya*, one can say that one "is not wholehearted." Of course, I do not allude here to the "Tzaddik* who is not wholehearted," but rather to one who "is not wholehearted" at a stage far lower than that of the imperfect Tzaddik* — that is, the person who has not attained fullness and perfection. Despite this lack and insufficiency, it remains clear that the current situation, as well as the distinction that can be made between action conducted in Eretz Yisrael* and outside of it, is indeed in accordance with what has just been said — and that reality is perhaps even more pronounced and clear-cut.
I will add the following. I am surprised to observe that you do not seem to see that the numerical and structural majority of our brethren, the children of Israel, are outside the Holy Land. Furthermore, the action conducted here does not encounter the obstacles and troubles found there, where everything is blocked by the iron chains of organizations and various parties. No doubt you will admit that one does not have the same relationship with someone who presents himself as a guest, especially if he comes from the United States, and with one who holds a function within a local organization, within which he is "the slave of slaves." This is quite evident and it is therefore unnecessary to say more. Moreover, the question you pose at the end of your letter is not very clear. If you allude to the Conservative movement (note 6: One of the branches of American Reform Judaism), I will first specify that one must feel the greatest compassion for the Jews who have been misled or who have misled themselves by adhering to it. The same applies to those who lead them in order to earn their livelihood, to receive a good salary, although they are conscious of the responsibility that is theirs and the punishment they face. The same is not true, however, for the movement itself and its institutions (note 7: It has no reason to exist and compassion in this matter is therefore misplaced). The Halachah* clearly establishes what the situation is, in the Mishnah*, the Gemara*, and the Yad HaChazakah*, Laws of Teshuvah*, chapter 3, paragraph 8. This cannot in any way be compared to working for the Hillel institute (note 8: Active among students in the United States), whose official position and objective are not the negation of the heavenly character of the Torah*.
We are on the eve of the luminous day of Lag BaOmer*, which establishes a link between the inner dimension of the Torah* and its revealed aspect, bringing it to light. Chassidus* explains the novelty introduced by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai*. May Hashem therefore grant that each person be changed thereby, within all of Israel. For the interior part of the soul, linked to the inner dimension of the Torah*, remains faithful to Hashem, including at the moment of transgression, and even among the simplest of people. May all of this therefore appear clearly, in the manner defined by Tanya*, at the end of chapter 19, so as to repel and push away the other side and the forces of evil, so that they have no hold, not even upon the garments of the soul — thought, speech, and action. Granted, a person is by nature attracted to what is new. But you will be in a position to act in accordance with what has just been said, and our Sages* specify (note 9: Regarding the shape of a Shofar*) that "the simplest must be preferred" — meaning a firm observance of the Torah* and Mitzvos*. As I have said, this principle must appear clearly in the garments of the soul — thought, speech, and action — to the point of setting a good example in an evident manner, without requiring prior reflection and deepening on the part of one whose Judaism, whose "Orthodox politics," is his profession. And nothing resists the will. I send you my blessing to give good tidings of all this. Of course, I allude to your sincere letters, and I exclude therefrom the warnings and remarks that may have prevented you from sharing the thoughts of your heart. With my blessing,
