Volume 19 · Letter 275

By the grace of Hashem,

19 Iyar* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

You inform me of your particular situation and I will mention your name once again near the holy resting place of my father-in-law (note 1: This having already been done following letter no. 7166), the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. When the Rav and Chassid* was here, it seems to me that I told him, while discussing your case, that I see but one single reason for this delay (note 2: In earning a livelihood). It is your desire to force things since you began writing to me about this. Granted, it is only of a found object that it is said one always discovers it by surprise. Nevertheless, the same applies to the manner of earning one's livelihood. A great effort does not advance anything; on the contrary. It is sometimes explained, in this regard, that it is necessary to follow the ways of nature in order to earn one's livelihood, just as for satisfying all the needs of a person, as it is said: "In all that you do" — precisely (note 3: The action of the person being necessary).

Nevertheless, when one fashions such garments beyond all measure, not only is such prolongation of no use, but moreover, it hinders rapid advancement. Granted, you are right to write that you have been emphasizing this problem for several years already. I must, however, observe that from the outset, you introduced your effort in this matter and wished to rush things. But in any case, one cannot perceive a person at the time of his misfortune. Furthermore — and this is essential as well — the merit of the public comes to your aid and, above all, that of your important actions conducted in the domains of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, leader of Israel. I am confident that the firmness of your trust in Hashem will broaden and hasten the blessing you will receive. May Hashem grant that this be so very soon, in the most literal sense, with a visible and tangible good. We have just experienced the luminous day of Lag BaOmer*, the Hilloula* of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai*, whose conduct was based on the verse: "Strangers will come and tend your flocks" (note 4: So that he could devote himself to the study of the Torah*), as explained by Tractate Berachos* 35b. May Hashem therefore grant that it be so regarding you as well — meaning that you will earn your livelihood in true abundance, and that you will devote the greatest part of your time, energy, and capacities to the domains of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. With my blessing to give truly good tidings, with true joy and very soon,
