Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7298 — Health
Volume 19 · Letter 269
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Iyar* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Yitzchak (note 1: Rav I. Dubov, of Manchester. See, regarding him, letter no. 7070),
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 12 Iyar*, containing a request for blessing that will be read, at a propitious moment, near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us:
A) You ask me about the end of the first chapter of Tanya*: "All Jews also naturally possess qualities, such as compassion and good deeds, deriving from it" (note 2: From the animal soul). You ask me why modesty is not mentioned (note 3: Since these are the three qualities by which Jews are distinguished. See, on this subject, letter no. 1793). The reason is the following: it is not a natural, innate quality. On the contrary, Jews are "brazen among the nations." It is therefore only in a second stage (note 4: They do not possess it from the outset) that they come to acquire this modesty, as explained by Tractates Nedarim* 20a and Beitzah* 25b.
B) Before that, the text says: "While one commits transgressions, one is called a consummate wicked person. If, subsequently, one attains Teshuvah*, one is called a perfect Tzaddik*." You ask me what one is called who has not yet attained Teshuvah* (note 5: But is no longer at the moment of the transgression). The Halachah* specifies this in the revealed part of the Torah*, regarding one who is not believed when he bears testimony. And Chassidus* specifies that the transgression creates a blemish, that this blemish persists as long as one has not attained Teshuvah*. Such is therefore the name he bears.
You tell me that your grandson, Shneur Zalman, has reached the age of the practice of Mitzvos*. May Hashem grant that, from this age of thirteen and the obligation of Mitzvos*, he grow and attain, at fifteen, the study of Gemara*, as ruled by the Mishnah*, in Tractate Avos*, chapter 5. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, in good health,
M. Schneerson,
