To the young man Meir (note 1: Rav M. Mintsberg, of Yerushalayim*),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 2 Iyar*:

A) Should one recite the Tachanun* in the Shema Yisrael* before retiring, at the conclusion of Shabbos*? The answer to this question can be deduced from the Selichos*, which are recited at the conclusion of Shabbos*, precisely during the second part of the night. Everything therefore depends on whether one recites the Shema Yisrael* in the first or in the second half of the night.

B) You also make reference to the three words that are repeated in the Shema Yisrael* (note 2: The last three, which allows one to reach the count of two hundred and forty-eight words, corresponding to the two hundred and forty-eight Injunctions of the Torah*). The various opinions on this subject are cited by the Shulchan Aruch* and by the later Sages. I am surprised that you pose such a question from another continent. Concretely, you will therefore ask the elderly Chassidim* and observe the actual practice.

I took note, with pleasure, in your letter, of the actions you are conducting within the framework of the youth of the Chabad* association. No doubt you will convince your friends to do the same. May Hashem grant that in this way as well, you multiply the blessings of Hashem, through your ardor and constancy in the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, as well as through your practice of Mitzvos* in the best manner. א) בהנוגע לאמירת תחנון בקשעה"מ במוצש"ק,

מובנת ההוראה מאמירת תחנון בסליחות במוצש"ק שהוא לאחר חצות לילה, שמזה נלמד בשאלתו, שתלוי בזמן קריאת הק"ש לפני חצות או לאחרי'.

ב) בכפילת שלש התיבות בק"ש,

ידועות הדיעות בזה בשו"ע ואחרונים, ולפלא ששואל מעבר לים, ובהנוגע לפועל ישאל אצל זקני אנ"ש ומעשה רב.

נעם לי לקרות במכתבו מפעולותיו במסגרת צעירי אגודת חב"ד ובודאי גם על חבריו ישפיע בהאמור, ויהי רצון שגם עי"ז יתוסף בברכות השי"ת בהתמדתו ושקידתו בלימודו בתורת הנגלה והחסידות ובקיום המצות בהידור.
