Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7284 — Teshuvah
Volume 19 · Letter 255 · To: lieu de cela
By the grace of Hashem,
5 Iyar* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
After a long interruption, I duly received your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar*. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. You will understand my dismay, adding to my surprise and immense astonishment, upon considering the conclusion of your correspondence, in which you tell me that you have resigned (note 1: From a position as spiritual guide of the Yeshivah*), but that you nevertheless continue your teaching to three young men and a fourth, older person. It is incredible that you use all your capacities in this manner, when the service of Hashem must be commensurate with what it can be. Indeed, our Sages* say: "The Holy One, blessed be He, made nothing useless in His world." It is therefore quite clear that if you do not make full use of the strengths at your disposal, you call into question the creation and its organization as a whole. How much more so is this the case if one accepts the definition that the Baal Shem Tov* gives of Divine Providence*, according to which every specific aspect contributes to the global Design. Therefore, if this aspect is not commensurate with what it must be, which Hashem forbid, it is indeed all of the forces that are called into question.
It is difficult to say more, so frightening is this, especially for someone who, for a certain time, exercised his influence upon others in order to lead them to the study and practice of Chassidus*, whose foundation is joy and enthusiasm — sentiments that generate the greatest eagerness. Instead of this, you exercise your "generosity" toward yourself and toward others, which leads you to deliver your teaching to... three young men and a fourth, older person. Of course, you will write to me that you can justify yourself by the fact that so-and-so did not behave properly, but this in no way exempts you from putting the Torah* and Mitzvos* into practice, even if this man does not do what he should. In general, explanations are never lacking, even when the difficulty itself persists. May Hashem therefore grant that, upon receiving this letter, you continue your action among those around you and, above all, within the Yeshivah*, as it is said: "And you shall spread forth" (note 2: To the west and to the east, to the north and to the south), in the literal sense and according to the explanation that can be given of this expression, without putting forward pretexts. First of all, the Precept: "And you shall spread forth" applies each day in an increasing manner. Furthermore, it enables one to compensate for what was lacking in the past, as explained by Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, at the end of chapter 9: "If one was accustomed..." (note 3: To studying one chapter, one will study two). And nothing resists the will, including in this matter. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
