To the young man, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Naftali (note 1: Rav N. Roth of Yerushalayim*. See, regarding him, letters no. 6462 and 7204) HaCohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I hope that you arrived well in London (note 2: Where Rav Roth made a stopover, returning to the Holy Land after a visit to the Rebbe) and I would like to know whether, during your journey, you met Mr. Shneur Zalman Jaffe and the members of his family, may Hashem grant them long life. Indeed, you were on the same ship. Likewise, did you have the opportunity to disseminate the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) to the outside? For, the importance of taking advantage of every event and every opportunity in this matter has been emphasized many times. Indeed, the Baal Shem Tov* teaches this concept regarding Jews who find themselves in various countries (note 4: They must then disseminate the Torah there), as is printed at the end of the Likkutei Torah*, published by Kehot. To clearly emphasize all this and make an addition, I would like to remind you that during your stay in London, you must give news from here and of what was said at the Chassidic* farbrengens*. Furthermore, you will speak of the evening Yeshivos*, of the positive actions accomplished there, and of the importance of such accomplishment. You will describe the profound change that resulted for the students and for their entire surroundings. In this matter, you will not exercise modesty, since it is said regarding this: "I shall walk in expansiveness" — especially concerning what has an impact on concrete action and what results from it for the service of Hashem, in this case for the creation of evening Yeshivos* in London. And it is known, in this regard, the means of determining the origin of each argument (note 5: It emanates from good or from evil depending on whether it leads to strengthening one's service of Hashem or weakening it), as the HaYom Yom* explains on the date of 23 Sivan*.

Of course, what has just been said does not contradict what I indicated to you, confidentially, regarding these evening Yeshivos*. For in all that belongs to the domain of holiness, we are asked to ascend, never to be content with past achievements, nor even with the present. As the Alter Rebbe* says regarding this domain of holiness, at the end of chapter 13 of the Tanya*: "The head and the intellect of the lower levels are lower than the heels and the feet of the upper levels." Now, the Alter Rebbe* expresses no doubt on this subject and even reinforces this idea by concluding: "Our Sages* state that 'the feet of the angels surpass them.'" This is a more emphatic explanation of what was stated previously: "All the lower levels and stages are as insignificant compared to those that surpass them."

This statement is the source of what I told you regarding the second stage of the development of the evening Yeshivos*. In this matter, you will make use, in the appropriate manner and with the required enthusiasm, of the talents that were granted to you. And I hope that you will quickly reach this second stage. To all this, one should apply the words of the Alter Rebbe* previously cited — not only "are as insignificant compared to..." — but, of course and above all, because the preceding stage, that is, the current situation, is indeed a level within the domain of holiness, one that can be qualified as head and intellect. This is quite clear. If you have one or two free days, it would be good for you to go to Manchester and especially to the Yeshivah* of that city. You will convey my greetings to the teacher and to the dean. You will also ask his permission to convey my greetings to the students of this Yeshivah* as well, may Hashem grant them long life. Of course, conveying my greetings consists of delivering before them words of Torah* and encouragement that were heard at the Chassidic* farbrengens*. I rely on your judgment to determine which explanations are appropriate to choose. With my blessing of success in all this and to give good tidings,

תקותי שבטח הגיע צלחה ללונדון, ואתענין לדעת אם במשך הנסיעה התראה עם מר שניאור זלמן יפה וב"ה - שי', כיון שנוסעים הם באני' אחת. כן אם היתה הזדמנות בכגון דא להפיץ המעינות חוצה, וכמדובר זה כו"כ פעמים אודות הנחיצות לנצל כל ענין והזדמנות בכיוון זה. ובפרט ע"פ תורת הבעש"ט, כמבואר בהענין דבנ"י התועים בארצות (נדפס בסו"ס לקו"ת הוצאת קה"ת).

כן להעדפה ולתוספת - באתי לעורר אשר במשך שהותו בלונדון בודאי ידבר, נוסף על פ"ש מכאן ומהענינים בההתועדויות דכאן, בהנוגע לישיבות הערב, אודות הפעולות הטובות וגודל הענין, ואיך שעורר זה שינוי מהות בהתלמידים ועל כל סביבתם וכו' וכו', ואין לנהוג בזה בנוהג של ענוה, שהרי על כגון דא נאמר ואתהלכה ברחבה, וביחוד כשנוגע לפועל ונפק"מ לפועל ולתוצאות העבודה בהנוגע לישיבות הערב בלונדון. וידועה הבחינה בכגון דא מאיזה צד באות הטענות וכו' (נדפס בהיום יום כ"ג סיון).

פשוט שאין בהאמור סתירה, למה שדברתי עמו בהנוגע לישיבות הערב, בחדר לפנים מחדר, - שהרי בעניני קדושה נצטוינו להעלות בקדש, ושלא להסתפק כלל בהישגים שבעבר ואפילו בהווה. ובעניני קדושה הרי, בלשון רבנו הזקן בספר התניא שלו ספי"ג: בחי' ראש ומוחין של מדרגות תחתונות הן למטה מבחי' עקביים ורגלי מדרגות עליונות מהן. ולא נסתפק רבנו הזקן בזה, ומייסד הענין עוד יותר, וכסיומו: וכמאמר רז"ל רגלי החיות כנגד כולם. והענין בא בביאור על מה שקדמו, בנוסח מודגש עוד יותר, אשר "כל מעלות ומדרגות שלמטה הם כאין לגבי מעלות ומדרגות שלמעלה מהן".

וזהו גם היסוד למה שדברתי עמו ע"ד השלב השני בהתפתחות ישיה"ע. ובעזר הכשרונות שחונן בהם, באם ינצלם כדבעי ובמרץ הדרוש בענין זה, הרי תקותי שיבוא ג"כ בקרוב השלב השני. אז על הענין כולו - יש להמליץ דברי רבנו הזקן הנ"ל, אלא שכמובן וגם פשוט - לא רק במ"ש כאין וכו' אלא והוא העיקר, ששלב הקודם - המצב בהווה - הוא מעלה ומדרגה בקדושה עד שנקרא ראש ומוחין וכו', וק"ל.

באם ימצא יום או יומים פנוים, מהנכון שיבקר במנשסתר ובעיקר בהישיבה אשר שם, וימסור פ"ש ממני להר"מ ור"י שי' ובבקשת רשותו למסור פ"ש ממני גם לתלמידי הישיבה שי'. ומובן שפ"ש שלי ענינה, שימסור איזה ענין של תורה והתעוררות ששמע בעת ההתועדויות. ואל בינתו אשען באיזה ענין יבחר.
