Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7141 — Health

Volume 19 · Letter 110

By the grace of Hashem,

6 Teves* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, with what was enclosed, and I respond to the three questions posed therein:

A) Regarding the summer camp, you were able to see and observe, last year, how important it was, especially in the state of New England. In my view, it is therefore clear that a particular effort, a specific action, is necessary so that this camp continues its activity for the girls. For next year, there remain several months before the season. The appropriate effort will therefore enable you to integrate those who come from circles having the means to pay for the stay. Thus, there is reason to hope that there will be no deficit, and even that part of the past deficit will be covered. You tell me you wish to maintain this camp "for the sake of Hashem" (note 1: Without profit). Nevertheless, experience proves that what is durable must be subsidized. One must therefore do everything in one's power, through natural means, to obtain this. Certainly, our Sages* say that "all beginnings are difficult," but in this case, that beginning has already passed. Henceforth, everything will be easier.

B) You ask me whether it is appropriate to multiply prayers (note 2: See, following this, letter no. 7200) for material success, as well as for the preservation of health. I am, of course, surprised by your doubt and the question you ask me. Indeed, our Torah*, the Torah* of life, commands us: "You shall carefully guard your souls," and the Rambam* rules, in his Laws of Dispositions, at the end of chapter 3 and the beginning of chapter 4, that it "belongs to man to have a healthy and whole body, which is among the ways of Hashem." In general, he thereby indicates that a person must preserve his physical health and everything pertaining to it. In the words of the Alter Rebbe*, in his Shulchan Aruch*, Laws of Physical and Moral Damages, paragraph 4: "The body of a person does not belong to him. He may not inflict upon it any suffering." You will also consult his Laws of the Preservation of the Body, and there is no need to say more, so clearly is this established. Moreover, according to the view of some of the early Decisors, when a person finds himself in need, including regarding his physical health, the Torah* enjoins him to pray to Hashem to obtain its satisfaction.

C) You also speak of a summer camp for the boys. You yourself specify that clarification is still necessary on this subject and that an intense effort must be deployed. In my view, you should therefore not take on, in addition, a new responsibility — namely, that of the boys' camp — in any case not for the coming year. Then, based on the results of this year, you will decide what is appropriate to do in 5721 (note 3: For the summer of 1961). With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, in calm and enthusiasm,
