Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7138 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 107 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
Days of Chanukah* 5720,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of generous
conduct, devoting himself to communal needs, descended
from an illustrious family, Rav S. Z. (note 1: Shneur Zalman Shazar. See, regarding him, letter no. 7084),
I greet you and bless you,
It has been a very long time since I received a letter from you, but of course, the Chassidim* give me news of you, especially since I myself inquire. You will understand the surprise, mixed with pain, that the news caused me that, for the first time since the founding of Kfar Chabad*, you did not take part in the Chassidic* farbrengen* of 19 Kislev* organized in that place. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to explain at length the great value of the slightest detail of this celebration, the importance of participating in the farbrengen* of the festival of the liberation, at Kfar Chabad*. Moreover, it exerts an influence on many people, the profound point being the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 2: Of Chassidus*), especially in this propitious year, that of the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*, as I have emphasized many times in my letters written this year. Of course, I do not doubt that there were good reasons for this (note 3: For this absence), but regarding others, it is in human nature not to ask for an explanation, not to wait in expectation for someone to come answer the questions. Moreover, very often, when the explanation is provided, it is not accepted. For each person finds for himself the right interpretation and the correct reason, according to his state of mind and his perspective.
Furthermore, it is clear that my purpose is not to moralize, which Hashem forbid. How much less is my intention to cause you pain. But in such a case, it is established that the other side (note 4: The forces of evil), with the men who counsel it, intervenes to sow trouble. According to the saying of the Rebbe Maharash*, "It sometimes wears the garb of an upright, humble Jew of good conduct." This citation appears, in its entirety, in the HaYom Yom*, on the date of 23 Sivan*. Perhaps this was the case in this instance and, consequently, you did not take part in this Chassidic* farbrengen*. Now, the other side could don this same garb once more and sow trouble again in the future. This is why I write to you, for I have good hope that it will not succeed, especially since the merit of the public comes to your aid, so that you make use of your influence in this matter, to disseminate the wellsprings.
I reiterate once more my blessing and I join the multitude of those who presented their wishes to you on the occasion of your seventieth birthday. As my father-in-law, the Rebbe, says — presenting it as a custom of the ancients — a Bar Mitzvah* boy, reaching the age of thirteen, is then concerned by Psalm 14 (note 5: Which he must then read each day). Thereafter, the same applies each year, so that, having reached the age of seventy, the Tehillim* that concerns you is Psalm 71. May Hashem grant that the words of the singer of Israel (note 6: Tehillim* 71:18) be fulfilled in you: "Until old age and advanced years, Hashem, do not abandon me, so that I may declare Your power to this generation, Your might to all who will come." With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings,
I enclose for you the copy of one of my letters which will undoubtedly interest you, as it deals with education.
