Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7137 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 106

By the grace of Hashem,

Days of Chanukah* 5720,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of the participants in the Chassidic* farbrengen* on the day

of the good tidings, the day of the deliverance of the Alter Rebbe*,

of our liberation and the emancipation of our

soul, in your city, may Hashem grant you long life (note 1: This letter was sent to many people),

I greet you greatly and bless you,

I learned with pleasure of your Chassidic* farbrengen* on the luminous day, 19 Kislev*, which our masters call: "festival of festivals" (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 3202). Without a doubt, as is the case whenever people who fear Hashem gather, words of Torah* were spoken, and these will lead to action — that is, to an increased practice of Torah* and Mitzvos*, throughout the coming year. Now, the Holy One, blessed be He, causes a good thought to be associated with the deed, especially when this thought manifested itself and was accepted at a propitious moment. Our Sages* say that one confers merit upon a day that is by nature propitious. May Hashem grant that all this be introduced into these days of Chanukah*, the Halachah* retaining the opinion of Beis Hillel*, according to which one adds, each day, candles and light. And one can derive an allusion to all this from the verse: "For the candle is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* is a light." Thus, there was the miracle of the oil which, as various texts state, alludes to the secrets and the inner dimension of the Torah*.

May each one therefore illuminate himself and illuminate his surroundings through "the candle that is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* that is a light," as well as through the luminary of the Torah*, which is its inner dimension revealed in our era through Chassidus*. Moreover, we celebrate the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*, of saintly memory. And it is known, as his holy epistle states, that when his wellsprings are disseminated to the outside — those of his teaching, that is, of Chassidus* — "the master shall come," the king Moshiach*. With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

M. Schneerson,
