Volume 19 · Letter 105 · Jours de ‘Hanouka 5720

Days of Chanukah* 5720,

Bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the

Baal Shem Tov*, of saintly memory,

Brooklyn, New York (note 1: This letter was addressed to Rav Ephraim Eliezer Yalles, of Philadelphia. This passage was added after reproducing the text of the preceding letter. See, regarding him, letters no. 6582, 7232, 7347, 7373, and 7419),

I greet you and bless you,

I thank you very much for the good news you announce to me — the improvement in the state of health of your wife, the Rebbetzin*. Indeed, the Halachah*, cited in Tractate Kesubos* 66a, establishes that "the wife of a man is like his own body." As is often the case, perhaps it is possible to suggest that the inner dimension of the Torah*, in this instance the Zohar*, volume 1, page 91b, and the Likkutei HaShas* of the Arizal* on Tractate Berachos*, specifies the reason for a principle of the revealed teaching of the Torah*. No doubt it will be the same for you. Thus, any possibility of fainting will disappear from the outset.

You refer to the rule according to which: "The verse introduces a change in order to determine a sine qua non condition" and you say that it does not apply exclusively to sacrifices. Now, everything is an effect of Divine Providence and I received your letter when I learned that this discourse had been published in the Maor (note 2: A rabbinical review of the United States. This discourse also appears in Likkutei Sichos*, volume 4, page 1253, note 3). I therefore asked that a reference be added to the Tosafos*, Tractate Menachos* 38a, to the Yad Malachi*, Lekach Tov*, fifth principle. You will also see the Asvan De-Oraisa*, at the twelfth principle. You wonder about the formulation of the Tosafos*, in Tractate Pesachim* 11a, which says: "For example, the sacrifices" and about the Lekach Tov*, page 77. You will understand it from the Tosafos* on Tractate Menachos*, previously cited.

The Shitah Mekubetzes* on Tractate Zevachim* 5a, according to the edition at my disposal, explains that the formulation: "Regarding their conformity, one considers them as a Mitzvah*, in general" must be understood in light of what is specified subsequently: "Regarding what is desirable." This means that the Mitzvah* applies in the conformity or in what is desirable and that its absence constitutes an obstacle to obtaining it. There is no external element that would intervene in this conformity or in what is desirable. You cite the Ramban*, commenting on the verse: "And the light was," which does not say: "It was so." The Torah Shelemah* mentions, in this regard, the holy Zohar* and the Sefer HaBahir*, which pose this same question. It is presumably this that the Ramban* had in mind when reporting the Midrash HaNe'elam*. In this regard, you will also see the end of the Keser Shem Tov* and the Or Torah* of the Maggid* (note 3: Of Mezeritch). Regarding our light, you will consult Tractate Chagigah* 12a.

You refer to the words of the Torah Or*, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "The 25th of Kislev*," which analyzes the kindling of lights in the Beis HaMikdash* (note 4: See, on this subject, letter no. 6145). This commentary explains the position of the Decisors according to which one kindles these lights only in the evening and arranges them from east to west. This is what the responsa of the Rashba*, the Ramban*, and the Tosafos* say in Tractate Yoma* 71a. You will also see the Tosafos Yom Tov*, in chapter 7 of Tractate Yoma* and chapter 3 of Tractate Tamid*. It also explains the order adopted in the morning: one first cleans the seventh light, then the sixth, which one kindles, and finally the seventh. The explanation of all this is very lengthy and therefore cannot be reported here.
