To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Chaim Abba (note 1: Rav H. A. Weiss, of Hamilton. See, regarding him, letter no. 5675),
I greet you and bless you,
After a long interruption, I duly received your letter of the fourth day of Chanukah*. You refer to the customs connected to the Bar Mitzvah*. In this matter, I received no other instructions than those mentioned in the HaYom Yom* (note 2: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Regarding the blessing Sheptarani, 'He has released me,' you will consult it on the date of 12 Kislev*"). One therefore begins to put on Tefillin* two months before the Bar Mitzvah*, without a blessing for a few weeks, then, when one becomes accustomed to putting them on, reciting the blessing. You will ask Chassidim* who perhaps know what was done in this matter in the country where we previously resided (note 3: In Russia). Likewise, it is good for the Bar Mitzvah* boy to recite the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "It is stated in Midrash* Tehillim*." It is easy to learn by heart and your son will therefore do so.
I hope that you took part in the Chassidic* farbrengen*, on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*. May Hashem grant that its imprint be preserved throughout the entire year. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

לאחרי הפסק ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מד' חנוכה.
ובמ"ש אודות מנהגים קשורים בבר מצוה, - לא שמעתי בזה הוראות, לבד הנדפס בהיום יום*, אשר מתחילים להניח תפילין שני חדשים קודם, שבועות אחדים בלא ברכה, וכשמתרגל בהנחתם, בברכה, וישאל אצל אנ"ש שאולי ידוע להם איך שנהגו בזה במקומם במדינתנו לפנים.
כן מהנכון לחזור - הברמ"צ המאמר ד"ה איתא במדרש תהלים, וקל ללמדו בעל פה, וגם בנו יעשה כן.
אקוה שהשתתף בהתועדות דיום הבהיר י"ט כסלו, ויהי רצון שיהי' רישומו ניכר בכל השנה כולה.
