Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7128 — Shidduchim
Volume 19 · Letter 97
By the grace of Hashem,
22 Kislev* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
A) I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me for clarifications on my correspondence from the end of last year. It is quite clear that my intention, in that response, was not merely to emphasize to you in general the necessity of repelling evil. I was speaking of continuing your agricultural work, for you told me that you had no trade. Furthermore, I clearly expressed my view that it would be wise to find a good match, materially and spiritually. Indeed, being on this agricultural settlement, you will be able to organize your work so that you learn a trade. Without a doubt, the management of this settlement seeks the well-being of those who work there. This resolves, at least initially, the question of housing. It follows that my instructions, determining your conduct for several years, remain valid only until you have learned a trade and found a match, at a good and fruitful time. Thereafter, you will decide with your wife how and where to settle subsequently.
B) Another point — your conduct and your letter seem to indicate that you have not been accustomed, until now, to fixed and methodical work, carried out on a daily basis. Now, there is here a particularly important point, an aspect essential for leading the appropriate life. It is imperative to master oneself and devote oneself to what is necessary, rather than to what one desires — that is, very often to something new. This is self-evident.
C) You also write to me that you cannot immediately seek a good match, because your moral situation is not at the level it should be. I hope that the very fact of entering into life, as ordained by our holy Torah*, the Torah* of life, will enable you to fight more easily against the evil inclination, to improve yourself in all the domains you mention. It has been observed that this was so for many people, in past years and still in our days.
D) I wrote to you that you must prepare to find a good match. What I meant was very simple. Due to our many transgressions, certain circles have permitted themselves conduct that is entirely negative, under the pretext that its purpose was to facilitate marriages. You must understand what I am alluding to. Now, in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, many unions are sealed with all the necessary modesty, and these couples are happy, materially and spiritually. It is indeed to this that I was alluding.
E) You ask me how to disseminate the teaching and customs of Chabad*, when you have not yet put into practice the precept: "Adorn yourself first." The answer to this question is twofold. On the one hand, it is impossible to deprive your surroundings of this knowledge of the Torah*, under the pretext that you are not what you should be, for these people are in no way responsible for that. Furthermore, if you are not arranging yourself as you should, if you still experience lack, it is quite clear that you must not add to this a deficiency in the dissemination of Chassidus*. This is so important that the Mishnah* states regarding it: "He acquired merit and conferred it upon the multitude," which means that the merit of all depends on it. One can deduce the situation at the other extreme, which Hashem forbid, for in order to put into practice: "Adorn yourself first," one must first seek and find all possible ways and means to develop success in this matter. When you know that an hour later you will have to expound important ideas before a large number of people, it is absolutely certain that you will wage this war more easily and hasten its victorious outcome.
We are approaching the days of Chanukah*, of which it is said: "You delivered the wicked into the hands of the Righteous, the heretics into the hands of those who devote themselves to Your Torah*." May Hashem therefore do likewise regarding the personal battle waged by each of us — that the wicked be likewise delivered to the Righteous and the heretics to those who devote themselves to the Torah*, as explained in the holy Tanya*. With my blessing to give good tidings as soon as possible, for a luminous and joyous festival of Chanukah*,
