Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7125 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 94
By the grace of Hashem,
20 Kislev* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 12 Kislev* and I begin with the most surprising point, which is stated in its paragraph 4, regarding the continuation of your work. Certainly, I can grant you some mitigating circumstances, since you introduce this paragraph with the words: "Troubling thoughts..." which indeed means that you reject them from the outset. Nevertheless, I am surprised that you can even entertain them. It is surely unnecessary to explain to you at length what is quite evident — the necessity, the fundamental character of every educational institution that wishes to be founded on sacred values. Moreover, this need is felt ever more clearly. Simultaneously, it is quite clear that you must endeavor not only that this school not be reduced, but furthermore, that it expand — first quantitatively, then, as a consequence, qualitatively, as is the Jewish custom. In this matter, one must put into practice the teaching of our Sages* that says: "If you make efforts, those efforts will be crowned with success," especially since there is a growing awareness of the necessity of receiving a religious education.
This leads me to the first paragraph of your letter, which refers to the way you express yourself. This point is connected to the above response. I mean that you surely kept a copy of your previous letters sent here, in which you spoke of your way of expressing yourself and your state of mind, as if all were lost, which Hashem forbid. You had then also mentioned such thoughts. Now, you have just realized that the situation is much better than what you had thought, and may Hashem grant that your trust in Hashem be thereby strengthened, for this improvement would then be faster and stronger. But it is useless to complain about the past. One must therefore concentrate on the future and on paragraph 4 of your letter. It would be good for you to consult with the Chassidim* who have contacts in the administrations you mention. I hope that with pleasant words and luminous terms, without any intimidation, you will explain to your wife that she must abandon these troubling thoughts, according to the expression you use in your letter, especially since her actions were recalled when prayers were offered for the success of her medical treatment and for her recovery.
Until this day, I did not wish to formulate the following remark. Nevertheless, I believe that now I cannot allow myself not to write it to you. In your previous letter, you wrote to me, as if it were an incidental point, that your son is a student at such-and-such a school. I do not know what the study conditions are in that place, but according to the well-known saying, "The good can always be improved." Now, there are several schools, for students of his age, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, in which one devotes oneself exclusively to sacred studies, permeated with fear of Hashem and, for some, with love of Hashem — Chassidic* schools. And anyone who is active in the educational domain must, above all, provide the good example himself, showing that one cannot content oneself with a half or a third education, especially if one takes into account the influence of the street — and you must understand what I mean. This is the difference between one who is moist to the point of moistening others and one who is moist only for himself.
I hope that on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, you participated in a Chassidic* farbrengen*, in the appropriate milieu, which means that the program you communicated to me for that day was carried out, and above all, that its effect will remain throughout the entire year. For it is the Rosh Hashanah* of Chassidus*, according to the letter of the Rebbe Rashab*, printed in the HaYom Yom* on the date of 19 Kislev*. And the term used here is indeed Rosh — head — and not beginning, for this day influences the entire rest of the year, just as the head commands all the limbs of the body. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
