Igrot Kodesh · Letter 71 — Founding Beis Rivkah, Mesibos Shabbos, and Communal Responsibilities

To our friend, remarkable young man,

Rav Menachem Zeev [1],

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letters.

A) Concerning Beis Rivkah*, I know how much your time is taken up by all your communal occupations, whose importance is undeniable and from which you cannot free yourself for a single moment, which Hashem forbid.

Nevertheless, one must consider that at this time and in this place, the creation of a girls' school based on holiness is a rescue operation for Jewish girls, whose education, moreover, largely conditions that of their brothers and the family atmosphere, as well as the purification of the Jewish atmosphere, in its entirety.

If one takes all these elements into account, I wonder whether this creation can truly be postponed.

Who better than you is aware that you are among the only ones that we know of, in your country, capable of assuming such a mission?

As long as it has not been possible for you to create a school for girls, you could at least organize Mesibos Shabbos* for them, which is easier. Experience has shown that those who participate in such Mesibos influence their friends afterwards to attend the Beis Rivkah and, in general, to improve their behavior.

B) Concerning the young man from Vancouver [2], I cannot explain your refusal. I am not on the spot, but I express to you, nevertheless, on this point, my total disagreement. However, I have never sought to impose my opinion and I will not change my attitude in this instance.

But, in any case, you must respond to this Rav, who addressed a polite and well-argued letter. You must justify why you refused this proposal that others would have accepted. You must accord him the honor to which he is entitled [3].

C) Your instruction concerning the publications has been followed and the fifty Shekels* that you sent have been distributed as you requested.

D) Concerning the writing of the Sefer Torah* [4], we have reached, thank Hashem, Parshas* Haazinu*. Whoever wishes to acquire a letter must therefore do so as quickly as possible. Now, among your friends from the Yeshiva*, some have not yet done so!

במענה על מכתביו:

א) ע"ד "בית רבקה", אמנם ידוע עד כמה שטרודים אתם באלה הענינים הצבוריים שהנכם עוסקים בהם, ואשר עומדים ברומו של עולם ואי אפשר להרפות מהם חלילה אף במקצת.

אבל בשים לב, כי יסוד בתי ספר לנערות על טהרת הקדש הוא בזמן הזה ובמקומות אלה שאלה של הצלת נפשות בנות ישראל, וגם כי החנוך של הבנות משפיע במדה מרובה גם על החנוך של אחיהם, על הרוח של משפחתם, ועל טהרת האויר ברחוב היהודי בכלל, בשים לב לכל הנ"ל איני יודע אם הענין סובל דיחוי.

ומי מכם יודע כי אתם היחידים במדינתכם מהידועים לנו שאפשר לפנות אליהם בהצעה כזאת

וכל זמן שלא עלה עדיין בידכם ליסד ב"ס לנערות, ראוי עכ"פ להשתדל בסידור מסבות שבת לנערות, שזה יותר קל. והנסיון הראה, כי מסבות האלו משפיעות אח"כ על חברותיהן ללכת ל"בית רבקה", ובכלל בשנוי הנהגתן לטובה.

ב) בענין הבחור מואנקווער, איני יודע טעמם בשלילת הענין (ואף שאינני על אתר, בכ"ז אין דעתי מסכמת עמהם כלל וכלל בזה, אבל מעולם הנני משתמט מהנהגה של "קבלו דעתי" ואף בנדו"ז כן הוא) אבל, בכל אופן, צריכים אתם לענות להרב שכתב אודות הנ"ל מכתב מנומס בצרוף טעם, המתקבל גם אצל אחרים, מפני מה דחו בקשתו, ויהי כבוד חברך חביב כו'.

ג) בקשתו בעניני הדפוס נתמלאה, וכן המעות שנתקבלו (נו"ן שקל) נתחלקו כהוראתו.

ד) בכתיבת הס"ת עומדים כבר בע"ה בפ' האזינו, ולכן כל הרוצה להשתתף באותיות צריך למהר בזה. ולדוגמא: אפי' מחבריו התמימים ישנם שלא נרשמו עדיין!!
