Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7094 — Chinuch

Volume 19 · Letter 63 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

29 Marcheshvan* 5720,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and

devotes himself to communal needs, of multiple

knowledge, Rav S. Y. (note 1: Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of Yerushalayim*. See, regarding him, letter no. 7066),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos* Parshas* Lech Lecha*, reporting to me the manner in which my words in my previous letter (note 2: This is letter no. 7066, regarding the prohibition of joining the governmental coalition) were interpreted. You yourself say that you have difficulty justifying them according to Halachah*. You specify what they respond: they give them what belongs to them by right. It is clear that this means nothing, according to the Torah*, neither in Halachah* nor in concrete action, unless one wishes to conceal the reality and the actions in question. Indeed, all this does not belong to them at all, and there is no need to say more, so painful and dreadful is this.

You tell me that, concretely, for you as well, the prohibition of the coalition to which I alluded constitutes a novelty. This new idea, however, is not mine. It is clearly expressed by the Shulchan Aruch* and it is part of the concretely applicable Halachah*. The novelty I introduced is the following. I have found no reference among the Decisors to the argument that this situation is an established fact for several years already, which I have also heard regarding Israeli ships (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 7040). On the contrary, it seems that this is the means of justifying the entire situation, as the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "And the one thousand nine hundred" (note 4: Printed in the Sefer HaMaamarim of the Alter Rebbe, Bereishis Shemos, page 419, and in the Migdal Oz, page 484. The present excerpt is found on page 358 of the Migdal Oz. It belongs to the Chassidic discourse entitled: "In order to understand the question") explains. It is indeed explained there that our generations are in a state of deep unconsciousness. This is why one whispered their name in the ear of the Jews (note 5: Which is a favorable practice for an unconscious person to regain awareness) — that is, this was accomplished by bringing the Baal Shem Tov*, whose name was Yisrael. Nevertheless, this unconsciousness also has a positive aspect, for if one were aware of what is taking place, one could not bear the pain — this is self-evident.

We are approaching the month of Kislev*, that of miracles and redemption, precisely connected to the oil that does not mix with any other liquid, whose light is ever increasing (note 6: Since the Chanukah* lights are kindled in ascending order), which one refuses to compare to the bulls of Sukkos* (note 7: Which are sacrificed in descending order, and Beis Shammai*, whose ruling the Halachah does not retain, deduces from this that the Chanukah lights are also kindled in descending order). Thus, we will finally merit the fulfillment of the promise according to which: "They shall be for you and for no other besides you" (note 8: The single sacrifice of Shemini Atzeres* alludes to the people of Israel, whereas the seventy bulls correspond to the seventy nations). May Hashem grant that this be so as quickly as possible, even before the beginning of this month (note 9: Of Kislev). With my blessing to give good tidings,

M. Schneerson,

You remark that at the end of chapter 9 of Iggeres HaKodesh*, one should say: "and to cleave to Hashem," rather than: "and to cleave to Him." Nevertheless, this would not allow one to understand what follows — "to her," referring to the Sukkah* of David, or "to him," applying to David himself. Moreover, before this, the text speaks of the service of Hashem or of the Sukkah* of David, but not of cleaving to Hashem. The first editions of Iggeres HaKodesh* already bore the version that has reached us, but not the second. It seems that "to her" indeed refers to the Sukkah* of David — that is, to the Attribute of Royalty, Malchus*, and the Divine Presence. In fact, various texts say that one must: "cleave to the Divine Presence," and on this entire subject, you will consult the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Chukas*, page 63d, and Parshas* Re'eh*, page 20b.
