By the grace of Hashem,

29 Marcheshvan* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I bless you and greet you,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Cheshvan*, in which you describe the state of mind and the areas that are not satisfactory in the city where you find yourself. You have therefore had the idea of going to continue your studies in another city. I am surprised that you could have such an idea. Indeed, you were educated in a Chassidic* family and you evolved in a Chassidic* environment. You have no doubt heard some of the accounts of our masters relating to all this, and you know their biography, which also delivers a teaching, since we are enjoined to follow the path of our masters. Now, they gave of themselves, displaying the greatest self-sacrifice to improve the situation of Jewish men and women, including the most distant, materially or spiritually. There is therefore here a great principle for each of us within all of Israel.

As for you, if, as you write, your moral situation is not satisfactory, one of the reasons being, according to you, the presence of certain students from families that do not perfectly observe the Torah* and the mitzvos*, it is quite clear that a decrease in the number of students from Orthodox homes will worsen the situation of the city. Conversely, the more the number of these Orthodox students grows, the more this situation will improve, especially if each of them becomes an active force, just as the students of the Yeshivah* are described as "candles to illuminate." It follows from all this that you must completely forget the hypothesis of leaving the seminary. On the contrary, it is you who sensed this lack, and it is therefore your responsibility to organize in this direction the students over whom you exert your influence. Likewise, you will exert a direct influence whenever it is possible, so that this positive evolution takes place. And the merit of the public will come to your aid. It is clear that you have the permission and the merit to disseminate these words among the students who can accept them. Together, you will act in this direction, and it is certain that Hashem will grant you success, all the more so since this seminary was founded and is directed by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, leader of Israel. In anticipation of your good tidings regarding all this,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
