Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7073 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 42
By the grace of Hashem,
14 Marcheshvan* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am returning to you herewith the letters you transmitted to me so that I might read them. Regarding the analysis contained in these letters, I am enclosing a press clipping from a newspaper published in Denver. It seems that these are people seeking new paths. If these paths open access to ancient practices, one can indeed examine them and determine whether they are wise, although, as our Sages* say, "all paths are presumed..." (note 1: Dangerous). On the other hand, if one is specifically seeking new "practices," and from what is said, it seems that this is indeed the case — if one wishes, in other words, to create a new religion — one can immediately raise a question about all this. For, ultimately, it is indeed a matter of putting into practice the ruling of the Mishnah* according to which: "the deed is essential" — the commonly accepted deed, of course. It is also said that the proclamation: "we will do and then we will understand" was a necessary prerequisite for the receiving of the Torah*. This was not so only at that time. It is still the case every day, but it is now much easier, after millennia of trials that have demonstrated the immutable character of the Torah* and the mitzvos*.
Now, the Torah* and the mitzvos* can in no way be the subject of a trade. One cannot, in principle, renounce certain mitzvos* in order to preserve others. Concretely, one must endeavor to put into practice the lightest ruling of our Sages*. Furthermore, the most insignificant person and the avowed wicked person must themselves do so. But it does not follow from this, it does not mean that one may adopt a new conception and trade in religion. Without a doubt, it is totally unnecessary to say more. May Hashem therefore grant that no account be taken of the reaction that might come from the person with whom you are in contact (note 2: That one dare not tell the person the truth, out of fear that he cannot accept it), when all this is transmitted to him. Indeed, it is not a question here of my words or yours, but of a ruling of our holy Torah*, Torah* of life, in the most literal sense. You may also cite as a reference the Rambam*, in addition to works of Jewish history dealing with the movements of ideas that arose or falsified the faith of Israel and its Torah*. Of course, you may also cite me. You will say that such is my conception, according to what you know, that I wrote it to you in one of my letters. But, once again, such is the unanimous view of the earliest Sages* as well as the most recent. I have just also received your letter of 7 Marcheshvan*, with what it contained. I address you my blessing to give good tidings of all this.
