By the grace of Hashem,

To the attention of the participants in the Chassidic* farbrengen* of the

Melaveh Malkah*, the meal of David the anointed king, at the conclusion of

Shabbos* Parshas* Bereishis*, "In the beginning, Hashem created

the heaven and the earth," may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, your letter concerning this Chassidic* farbrengen*, to which was attached your good resolution to study the Torah* in public. Furthermore, in accordance with the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (note 1: See, on this subject, letters no. 2310, 4761, and 6963), whose merit protects us, regarding Shabbos* Bereishis*: "It is in the manner in which one begins that everything continues" (note 2: The conduct of Shabbos Bereishis conditions that of the entire year). This confers the hope and conviction that you will indeed adopt this good conduct throughout the coming year, with the appropriate joy and enthusiasm. As the Apei Ravrevei* says, Orach Chaim*, chapter 300, the quality of this meal (note 3: The Melaveh Malkah, taken at the conclusion of Shabbos) is that it benefits the Luz bone, through which man will be revived (note 4: An indestructible vertebra from which the body will be rebuilt at the Resurrection of the Dead). May Hashem therefore grant that vitality and enthusiasm be renewed in all that concerns the Torah* and the mitzvos*, including in daily existence.

Furthermore, we are in the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*, and one of the fundamental points of his teaching is the necessity of serving Hashem with joy, enthusiasm, and fervor. Our masters and leaders relate that the Baal Shem Tov* "loved light," including in the most literal sense. According to a well-known account, he and his disciples would light a great number of candles at the conclusion of Shabbos*. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, and also, of course, of the strengthening and development of the holy institution, the Talmud Torah* Beis Yosef Yeshivah* Lubavitch, in your city (note 5: Toronto. See the following letter),

נעם לי לקבל מכתבם בהתועדות האמורה בצירוף החלטתם הטובה בת"ת דרבים.

ובפרט על פי פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בהנוגע לשבת בראשית ועניניו - "ווי מ'שטעלט זיך אוועק - אזוי גייט דאס", שזה נותן התקוה והבטחון שינהגו במדה טובה זו במשך כל השנה הבע"ל, מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב מתאימים.

ויהי רצון, ע"פ המובא בא"ר או"ח סי' ש' יתרון סעודה זו בהנאת עצם לוז, אשר ממנו יחי' האדם וכו' - אשר תתחדש החיות וההתלהבות בכל עניני תורה ומצות, וגם בחיי היום יומים.

וביחוד שנמצאים אנו בשנת המאתים להסתלקות הילולא של הבעל שם טוב, אשר מיסודי תורתו הוא - עבודת השי"ת בשמחה חיות והתלהבות, וסיפרו רבותינו נשיאינו אשר הבעש"ט "האט ליב געהאט ליכטיקייט", ועד כפשוטו, וכידוע הסיפור איך שהבעש"ט ותלמידיו הרבו בנרות במוצש"ק.

בברכה לבשו"ט בהאמור, וכמובן וגם פשוט - לבשו"ט מביסוס והתפתחות המוסד הק' ת"ת בית יוסף ישיבת ליובאוויטש אשר במחנם הט'.
