Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7070 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 39 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
11 Marcheshvan* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and
devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yitzchak (note 1: Rav I. Dubov, of Manchester. See, regarding him, letters no. 6564 and 7298),
I greet you and bless you,
After a long interruption, I received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, with the request for a blessing. Both will be read near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. May Hashem grant that the content of your next letter be joyous, including regarding your state of health. Furthermore, we have just experienced the month of Tishrei*, the seventh (note 2: The seventh after Nissan*, the month of the Exodus from Egypt), which is sated (note 3: Shevi'i*, seventh, shares the same etymology as Musba*, sated) with every good and which has a general scope for the entire year. May the blessing and success therefore be evident in all domains, communal and personal alike, throughout the year. With my blessing to give good tidings, in good health, with joy and enthusiasm,
M. Schneerson,
You tell me that the doctors prescribe that you eat often, which prevents you from prolonging your prayer, since until now you have had the practice of not eating before it, in accordance with the teaching received. Nevertheless, what you consume in this case serves a health purpose and prevents the formation of an acidic secretion in your intestines. It is therefore not a matter of satisfying your hunger, nor even of strengthening your body. Such a practice is clearly permitted, according to the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 89, paragraph 5. You will also see the words of the Pri Chadash*, cited by the Machatzis HaShekel*, at the same reference. And you will consult the established principle stated by the Yoreh De'ah*, at the beginning of chapter 117. It is almost certain that the teaching given (note 4: According to which one must not eat before prayer) does not apply in this matter. In order to take an additional precaution, you will annul your previous practice in the presence of three people (note 5: In accordance with the procedure for the annulment of vows). You also inform me of the amount that was given to you, and you have already indicated to the donor that you do not accept it. However, he has already given it, and you will therefore distribute it, in accordance with the assertion of our Sages*, in tractate Bava Basra* 133b, in the following manner: one third to the Beis Lubavitch* of London, one third to the Machane Yisrael* sick-visitation fund located here, and the last third for your own needs. You will use it with joy.
