To the young man Yaakov Immanuel (note 1: Rav Y. I. Shochat, of Toronto. See, regarding him, letters no. 4657, 7345, and 7382),

I greet you and bless you,

After a long interruption, I received your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Cheshvan*, in which you describe your activities in the domain of education and, more generally, in all that concerns spirituality. Of course, I was above all pleased to learn of the classes you give to a group of young people, which is expanding more and more — which, without a doubt, is also true in the qualitative dimension. Of course, it is very difficult to observe this with one's eyes of flesh. I have good hope, even though you do not specify it, that in commenting on the thirteen Principles (note 2: Of the faith, according to the Rambam*, during these classes), you seize every opportunity to link each idea to concrete action — indeed, to daily life. In fact, the Mishnah* rules that "the deed is essential." And this is not an independent aspect but rather the foundation of the entire edifice. You will also consult Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 21. Of course, the expression above, "you seize every opportunity," also includes creating this opportunity yourself. More generally, the simple fact of meeting this group justifies asking to teach them the laws necessary for daily life. This is self-evident.

What has just been said also concerns the synagogue where you still find yourself, after having spent the festivals of the month of Tishrei* there. In this matter, the assertion of our Sages* applies: "If you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." As for those who listen to you, even if some of them put into practice the assertion: "I sleep in exile," it is clear that the end of this verse is right in saying, regarding them: "but my heart is awake" for the Holy One, blessed be He, for His Torah* and His mitzvos*. May Hashem therefore grant that you strengthen all this, according to the need of the moment and the slogan of this past year: "And you shall spread..." (note 3: To the west and to the east, to the north and to the south). To this is added the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*, and when his wellsprings spread to the outside, the master, the king Moshiach*, will come (note 4: In accordance with the promise made by Moshiach* himself to the Baal Shem Tov* when he experienced an ascent of the soul during the Rosh Hashanah* prayer). With my blessing of success and to give good tidings of all this,

לאחרי הפסק ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מר"ח חשון, בו כותב מפעולותיו בשטח החינוך ובענינים רוחנים בכלל.

ומובן שבעיקר נעם לי לקרות ע"ד שיעוריו בקבוצת נוער ההולכת ומתרבה בכמות, ובודאי גם באיכות, אף שכמובן זהו מסובך ביותר לראות בעיני בשר, ותקותי חזקה, אף שאינו מזכיר עד"ז, אשר בביאורו י"ג העיקרים וכו' - מנצל כל הזדמנות לקשר הענינים עם מעשה בפועל ועוד יותר - בהנוגע לחיי היום יומים ובפרט שכפס"ד המשנה - המעשה הוא העיקר, שהוא לא רק חלק בפ"ע אלא מוכרח לקיום כל הענין כולו, ועיין ג"כ אגה"ק לרבנו הזקן סי' כ"א, ומובן ג"כ שהביטוי לעיל, מנצל כל הזדמנות כולל גם לראות ליצור הזדמנות, כיון שהזדמנות הכללית, ז.א. פגישתו עם הקבוצה מספיקה להעמיד הדרישה להוראה בהלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומי, וק"ל.

וכל הנ"ל אמור ג"כ בהנוגע לביהכ"נ אשר ממשיך שם לאחרי היותו בו בימי המועדים דחודש תשרי, ועל כל האמור קאי פס"ד רז"ל יגעת ומצאת. ובהנוגע להשומעים, אפילו אם נמצא בהם כאלו, המקיימים בפועל אני ישנה בגלותא, בודאי שצודק בהם סיום הכתוב: ולבי ער (להקב"ה תורתו ומצותיו) ונמצא בהם.

ויהי רצון שיוסיף בהנ"ל מתאים לדרישת השעה והסיסמא של שנה העברה וגם דעתה - דופרצת וגו' והרי נתוסף גם הענין דשנת המאתים של הסתלקות הילולא של הבעש"ט, אשר לכשיפוצו מעינותיו חוצה קאתי מר דא מלכא משיחא.
