To the Rav* and Chassid*, the Tzaddik*, from an illustrious family,

Rabbi Shalom Yechezkel Shraga (note 1: Rav S. Y. S. Rubin Halbershtam, of Brooklyn, Rabbi of Tchechinov. See, regarding him, letter no. 5966),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me for references on the words of the Maggid of Mezeritch*. In accordance with your request, an index of the Chassidic* books that have been published was sent to you. You ask me about the words of the Maggid of Mezeritch*, reported by a book of the Mitteler Rebbe*. Even though one cannot draw proof from the fact that a certain assertion has not been found (note 2: No one being able to claim to know everything), it is known, nevertheless, that in a general manner, the latter does not cite the names of the works and authors he reports in his books (note 3: Therefore, even if he cited the Maggid of Mezeritch*, he did not do so by name), unlike the practice of the Tzemach Tzedek* and even that of the Alter Rebbe* (note 4: Who indeed provide these specifications). Regarding the books of the Tzemach Tzedek*, such an index has not yet been established. One who wishes to find this assertion therefore has no other solution than to consult his books page by page.

You are considering the publication of the letters I addressed to you. If this is of interest, arouses the fear of Hashem, the practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, it is clear that you may do so. I send you my respects and express the wish that each one of us do everything in his power to disseminate the wellsprings of the Baal Shem Tov* until they reach the outside. Thus, we will merit the coming of the master, the king Moshiach*, very soon. With my blessing to give good tidings,

במענה למכתב כת"ר, בו שואל ע"ד ציונים לדברי הרב המגיד ממעזריטש כו'.

כבקשתו נשלח לו המפתחות מספרי דא"ח שהו"ל.

ולשאלתו אודות דברי הרב המגיד ממעזריטש בספר אדמו"ר האמצעי, אף שלא ראינו אינו ראי', ידוע אשר בכלל בספריו, אין נזכרים שמות הספרים והאישים שמביא דבריהם, ודלא כספרי הצמח צדק ואפילו ספרי אדמו"ר הזקן.

בהנוגע לספרי אדמו"ר הצ"צ, לע"ע לא נערכו מפתחות מסוג הנ"ל, והרוצה למצוא, אין עצה כ"א לעבור על הספרים מדף לדף.

במ"ש אודות פרסום מכתבי אל כת"ר, - באם תהי' בזה איזו תועלת להתעוררות יר"ש תורה ומצות, מובן שהרשות בידו.

בכבוד ובאיחולים אשר כאו"א מאתנו ימלא כל התלוי בו להפיץ מעינות הבעש"ט עד שיגיעו גם חוצה ונזכה להקאתי מר דא מלכא משיחא בעגלא דידן.
