To Mr. Pinchas (note 2: Mr. P. Schneersohn, of Kfar Ata),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of this Tuesday. A name has intrinsic value and, in this case, you are a descendant of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*. I therefore have good hope that your origin is evident in your concrete action. Indeed, in addition to the conduct expected of every Jew toward his faith and his Torah*, the members of the family of the Rav* (note 3: Of the Alter Rebbe*) must, obviously, strengthen themselves and adopt the most rigorous attitude. The merit of your ancestors assists you so that you can accomplish all this. And nothing withstands the will. I would like to know whether you have preserved from your parents, or have heard from your relatives, some memories of the old days, written by them or transcribed by other people. I thank you for giving me this information. With my respects and my blessing,

You ask me what your lineage is within the Schneersohn family. It would be good to verify on site, in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, that of your father, may he rest in peace, based on what is cited in the Sefer Toldos Mishpachas HaRav MiLiadi* (note 4: The book of the genealogy of the Rav of Liadi) by M. S. Slonim. Indeed, this work mentions the name of Chaim, son of Pinchas, who passed away in Yerushalayim* in 5665 (note 5: 1905), himself the son of Rav Nachum Yosef and Sarah Rivkah, daughter of the Rav and Chassid* Moshe, son of the Alter Rebbe*.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מיום השלישי, וכיון אשר שמא מילתא היא ושייך לגזע רבנו הזקן בעל התניא (פוסק בנסתר דתורה) והשולחן ערוך (פוסק בנגלה דתורה) תקותי חזקה אשר גזע צור מחצבתו ניכר במעשה ובפועל, ז.א. אשר נוסף על הנהגה הנדרשת מכל אחד ואחד מבני ישראל לדתו ותורתו, הרי בני משפחת הרב עליהם להוסיף ולהדר בזה כמובן, וזכות אבותיהם מסייעתם למלאות גם את זה, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

אתענין לדעת אם נשמר מהוריו (או ששמע) ומקרוביו איזה זכרונות ימי קדם, בכתב ידם או רשימות מאחרים, ות"ח על ההודעה בזה.
